Completed Census Requests / John Cadman 1851 Warwickshire Census Stray
« on: Monday 14 June 04 22:24 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my great, great grandfather John Cadman in the 1851 census.

He was born in Bulkington, Wks. in 1834.

He was living with his family in Bulkington, Wks. in the 1841 census.

However, I have been unable to find him in Warwickshire in the 1851 census.  In future censuses he appears back in Bulkington and later in Mancetter.

He was a hand loom ribbon weaver.

If anyone can help me find him in 1851 I would really appreciate it. He would have been aged about 16 at the time of that census.

Completed Census Requests / Where were the two Enoch Paynes in 1861
« on: Saturday 12 June 04 17:50 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks to those who helped me to locate my Payne relatives in the 1891 census, especially Ange.

The problem now is where were the two Enoch Paynes in the 1861 census. They don't seem to be in Leicestershire. Could they have moved back to Derbyshire where Enoch senior got married in 1830. They got married in the Horsley/Smalley/Heanor area.

The story so far:

I am trying to find my great, great grandfather in the 1861 census. His name was Enoch Payne and he was born in Leicester in 1843.  I am also trying to find his father who by this time could have been dead. His father was also called Enoch Payne and was probably born in Burbage near Hinckley Leicestershire.

My Payne line has been causing me quite a problem for a while.  However, I am beginning to get it cracked now.  It is quite a fascinating story and I hope someone is able to help me to complete the story.

The Payne’s lived around Burbage near Hinckley (Leicestershire) during the 1700’s. Most were baptised at the Great Presbyterian Meeting Place. The first of three “Enochs” in my line was baptised at this place in 1813 although he was born in 1808.  However, after much research and checking I find that he marries an Elizabeth Hanson of Horsley Woodhouse at a place nearby called Smalley (ironically both villages are just a few miles away form were I live in Derbyshire). I think the reason why he was here at this time is connected with framework knitting perhaps???? Their first Child was baptised at nearby Marlpool Independent nearby continuing the nonconformist tradition of this branch of the family.

In the 1841 Census I find them in Leicester (Slater Street) with his occupation a Trimmer. They have a child here called Enoch who dies at about a year old. They have another boy called Enoch born February 1843, (My great, great grandfather).  I found him in the 1851 Census at Shepshed, Leics.  with a  John Payne who I think was his uncle (so where was Enoch the father?).  I have been unable to find either in the 1861 census – so if anyone could help or advise here I would really appreciate it.  The Enoch I found in 1851 marries an Amelia Francis Smith in Nov 1864 in Shepshed.  They have three children – Amelia dies giving birth to their third child. They are now living in Moira, Derbys. where Enoch is a Collier.  The child Enoch dies a few months later. Enoch leaves the two children to be raised by Amelia’s Sister in Shepshed.  He marries a Mary Ann Bradbury in 1871 in Ashby de la Zouch (The town were I was born).  They have there first child in Derby in 1872. Then in the 1881 census I find them in Sheffield where my great grandfather George Enoch Payne is born in November 1873 (listed as “Enoch” on the Census form).  Tragically Mary Ann dies of cancer in 1883. Enoch Marries a third wife also called Mary Ann in 1884. I have found Enoch in the 1891 census at Normanton near Sheffield but no George Enoch – Can anyone help here?  In 1894 George Enoch  Marries Rosa Smith at Woodville near Ashby de la Zouch.  Soon after he starts up his own business in Ashby as a greengrocer also selling rabbits and Fish.  Sadly, George Enoch’s father dies aged 56 in 1897 in tragic circumstances –

A MAN FOUND DROWNED IN THE CANAL - At the Mortuary, Plum Lane, Mr. Wright - coroner, held an inquest on the body of Enoch Payne, aged 56, labourer of Rippon Street, who was found drowned in the canal on Thursday.  About fortnight ago deceased was dismissed from his work at Hadfield's Steel Foundry, and since has been out of employment.  On Thursday he left home in search of work, carrying a bundle containing several items of clothing. The following evening the bundle was found on the towing path of the canal under Bacon Lane Bridge.  On Monday a man named William Jones saw a body floating in the water and brought it out. It was removed to the mortuary and identified as deceased. - The jury returned a verdict of "Found Drowned."
A very sad end to a very difficult life – I have since found that the manager of the foundry was a “very hard task master”.

In 1991 George ENOCH Payne was an apprentice saddler boarding at an Inn in Overseal and his future wife was in service at Buxton. Three years later they had married at Woodville in Derbyshire. How di they come to meet?

I am determined to complete the story of the Payne’s and if anyone can help me I would really appreciate it.

I have been unable to find George Enoch Payne or Rosa Smith in the 1891 Census. Rosa was born at Hartshorne, Derbyshire in August 1872.

I am determined to complete the story of the Payne’s and if anyone can help me I would really appreciate it.
