Themonsstar, I cannot thank you enough you are wonderful, just one more question though, would I find his service record at Kew or Glasgow?
I must look more closely at all the family photo's,  if he was in the army before the war during and after how did he father 11 children? Actually there is a resemblance to the family who lived next door and I thought we were only related by marriage!!!!
Many thanks again
Pam

Hi Scooter
When I get back I can send it to you as a personal message through this message board and you will just have to open the attachment, any problems and I will e-mail you.
Your only chance although it's a slim one is that the letter of recommendation for the award is in the war diary. The war diaries tend to just mention officers but you never know.

Hi Scooter
I will be going to France in 2 weeks time (I will be there and in Belgium for nearly 3 weeks) would you like me to take a photo of your uncles name on the Thiepval Memorial?

Yes I agree, That's the one I was thinking of. Follow the link I posted to the 4th Btn and scroll down a bit to 27th May. It all sounds pretty grim doesn't it?

Hi Scooter and Ady
Do you think this is the action that resulted in dad's award?

I know it's the in the 4th's web site but the 6th were heavily involved.

Hi Scooter
Glad to help, if you click on the link below
http://maps.google.com/
and in the search bit type in Marmetz, then click on either of the two options that come up , that will give you a rough idea where in France High Wood was.

Hi Scooter,
I should say that although the action on Sept 1916 started off in Mametz, it was actually to capture HIGH WOOD and I have put a link where you can read about it from the 7th view.http://www.fairmile.fsbusiness.co.uk/15thsept.htm

Thanks for all your suggestions, We have tried to blow up the cap badge but no luck. When I was at Kew I looked under series 363 and 364 but no luck. His name was Daniel Mc/Mackenzie and he lived at The Willows, Red Row. He was born 1873.
I am pretty sure the date on the photo is 1919, but I'm doubting myself now and if it was 1915 I should be able to find him on the medal roll.
Thanks for taking the trouble to help.

Hi, I can only tell you the action they were involved in was at Mametz Woods, the 6th were fighting alongside the 7th and 4th NF. I can send you a pm with the action as taken from the 7th NF war diary if you want.
