World War One / Which Regiment?
« on: Sunday 20 July 08 22:17 BST (UK)  »
My Gt Grandfather was in Abbassia, Egypt 1919, I was told he was a regular both before, during and after WW1, (I cannot be 100% about this information), but I don't know which regiment he was in.
He lived between Morpeth and Alnwick, Northumberland and I would assume he would have joined the Northumberland Fusiliers, but cannot find them being in Egypt at the time of the photo.
I have been to Kew and cannot find him on the medal roll. I did ask about his service papers but was told I would have to apply to Glasgow, is this correct?
I have attached the photo I have of him.

World War One / 1/7th Northumberland Fusiliers

A friend and I are researching the 1/7th Northumberland Fusiliers. Does anyone have any photo's, letters, diaries, newspaper cuttings, anything which will give a more personal view rather than the official histories.
many thanks

Thanks Mack and Ken
That's interesting that they were renumbered using 29 series, that helps a lot, many thanks for that, I think now I can discount the men whose numbers start 20, 24 etc.
I never spotted the other card for Punshon, just shows you have to double check everything.
Anyway you have all made my life easier at Kew, many thanks.
Ady's post came up while doing this, so thanks for that info Ady

Hi Ken
Thanks very much for your answer, yes I do subscribe to Ancestry and have looked at the medal rolls on there but for these men it does not show the battalion.
Thank's for saying what a SWB is I now understand how it relates to pensions, which I have also looked at on Ancestry.
I have looked at the London Gazette but it only says Northumberland Fusiliers and does not say the battailion.

The mans name is Punshon.
I think it's Kew here I come!

Thanks Gwil, I have been on quite a few of those sites with no luck, though I will keep plugging away.

Thank Ady
I have a list of 31 men who all received DCM's and I'm trying to sort out if any of them were from 7th NF.  The numbers are 4,5 and 6 digits and of course they were renumbered in 1916.  I've looked at most of the citations but it only says NF not the battalion. I think my only answer is Kew.
In the research you have done do you have any 7NF?
