Thank you but I'm certain that's not her. My Emily was born in St Saviour Southwark rather than West Ham and was 2 years younger.

I know but I don't think that's correct. On the same certificate my gt grandfathers father is also named as George Thomas Smith (although nobody knows who that was as he was adopted) and their witness was George Thomas Teagle, who brought my gt grandfather up as his son (a whole load more secrecy!)

Anyway my point is it's a lot of George Thomases on one certificate and I suspect is either a mistake or Emily didn't know her fathers real name.

I'm not sure where Frederick was in 1901, I can't find him. On Emily's marriage certificate her father's occupation is listed as soldier so I guess he could have been in service elsewhere.

My hunch is that the aunt would be a sister of her mother Maria but I can't find Emily with any of them. One sister was called Priscilla (misspelt as all sorts on different records but I can't find her in 1901 or 1911.)

I am desperately trying to find my gt grandmother Emily Elizabeth Jervis on both the 1901 and 1911 censuses.

I have her birth certificate - she was born 1896 in St Saviour Southwark to Frederick Jervis and Maria Jervis formerly Pearcey.

Family folklore is that she was raised by a wealthy Aunt(s) most likely in London but I just can't find her. I've tried every permutation of Emily, Jervis, Pearcey, niece etc. There was a lot of secrecy surrounding her background, finger put to lips apparently and I'd love to find out where she spent her childhood.

For background I have found her parents on the 1891 census mangled as Fred and Maria Gervis. I can't find a marriage record between the two however I believe she married a James Jervis in 1875. There is a death of a James Jervis in 1890 which fits this timeline as I guess she took up with Fred (relative of James I assume) shortly afterwards.

There is a death of a Maria Jervis in the right place in 1898 which I don't know for sure is her but would explain why Emily was then brought up by an aunt.

It's possible that Emily was abroad for those years I suppose but I wouldn't know where to begin looking.

If anybody could help it would be much appreciated.
