Hullo Louise,

Forgive the delay in answering. I'm not sure that your folk are connected to mine. My Attleborough Smiths are Samuel 1781 - 1847 and his wife Sophia WRIGHT 1774 - 1858. They moved to Essex. Any connection, do you think?

Thank you, Rarauk and Ciderdrinker. Sorry for my belated reply. I've been away from RootsChat for a while and, truth to tell, have got rusty as to where I was in my research. I have to refresh my memory,

Would the Siddons, Porters (rarauk) be Romany, by any chance? My Porter was from Essex. I'm looking for possible Romany or Indian connections.

Again, thanks.

Hullo Bron,

Not sure we can say there's a connection unfortunately. My William Porter was born 1816 married Eliza Abrams 17 Oct 1836 Latchingdon Cum Snoreham, Essex.
William’s parents: Richard Porter 1776-1823 and Sarah Cable (Cabel)
Balls. And I haven't proved they were Gypsies. I was hoping someone else might have knowledge of them.

Hi there - is anyone still active on this thread as I researching the Tudgays & Marshalls in Kingston Deverill . Will post more if there is any response as it's 10 years since there was any activity on this

Hi Helen,
I'm not really active, but I got an alert to your message. I've rather given up on finding a Romany connection although a cousin has had someone looking into our family history. This reseacher said the Tudgeys in my line were all dark haired and brown-eyed but that needn't mean much I guess. I thought the dark colouring in my line came from the Youngs or Wilks in Worcestershire. And I've wondered about an Indian connection - but again, I don't know <sigh>.

The Common Room / Re: Legality of marriage between a man & stepdaughter

It had never occurred to me, Fazekas, that May was a half-sister to Emily! Of course that'd be through their common mother, Elizabeth (Young) Wilks (and later Tudgey). I knew she was a half-sister to my grandmother Emily Mary (through Edward) – in fact, I was told that May brought Emily up. I remember May very well – Aunt May. She was musical and taught me a song to sing on my birthday! My Grandmother Emily Mary had a beautiful voice but I never heard her sing.

I, too, had wondered if Edward Tudgey had married Emily to save her reputation. But her reputation would have suffered much more by her liaison with him while her mother was still living than it would have been by an affair with someone else. Except that the first family (Edward and Elizabeth's children) always thought Edward had married his wife's sister, or so I was told by a family member.

Hullo Fazekas and Fiona, I'm Penny's cousin. Her father and mine were brothers. And we are 2nd(?) cousins of Don Fraser who is descended from Edward's first marriage to Elizabeth Wilks.

Fiona, that article Don wrote "Emily and Elizabeth" is not entirely accurate. It wasn't Emily who was present at her mother Elizabeth's death. It was her sister, Mary Elizabeth Wilks. She is named on her mother's death certificate as being there. The death occurred in the regist. dist. Edmonton, sub-district of Cheshunt, County of Hertford. Also I'm not sure how Don concludes that Elizabeth Young had fair hair and blue eyes. I rather think my grandmother and her brothers inherited their dark eyes and hair from her side of the family (the Youngs and/or Wilks).

The family skeleton was not so much that Emily married her stepfather, in my opinion. It was that Emily had an affair with her stepfather before her mother's death. They got married just in time to give legitimacy to their daughter Emily Mary (my grandmother).

Elizabeth died 17 March 1883;
Emily, Elizabeth's daughter, married Edward Tudgey, her stepfather, 20 Aug 1883.
Emily Mary Tudgey (Penny's and my grandmother) was born 1 Sept. 1883.

I'm fascinated to hear all this  information. Sorry, Fiona, that I missed your post last November. As I said, I'm Penny's cousin. Would your mother remember if Emily, Edward's wife, had dark colouring? A Tudgey relative has told me that the boys were so dark that children would call out "Jew boy" as they went down the street. Does anyone know of any Indian or Gypsy blood in the family?

Fazekas, I'll be very interested if you can shed more light on the family.

Yes, he is still living. I'll ask him for more details, such as the emigration dates.

Thank you KGarrad and sgf28. This is very interesting. I need to do some working backwards -- i.e. the Brewster here in Australia said his father came from Essex, but that's all I know for sure. Not sure if he has birth certificates or marriage certificate. Sarah Smith was from my line.

Again, thank you.
