Could Kerry daughter be born in Kerry before her parents went to America.

My feeling is that the mother had no money and begged for food on walk to Kerry from Cobh with her two daughters.

What version of surname is used on headstones if any survive.
I have family members whose baptism / marriage surnames differ slightly from their headstones.
In my case the headstone has correct spelling of surname.
Did anyone keep the old version of the surname ?

One of my Maternal Aunts had her baby in kidney unit of a London Hospital 68 years ago.
The hospital did not have a maternity ward.
The pregnant woman was too ill to be moved to a Maternity Hospital.

The mother, my aunt had very poor health in her thirties, but lived to reach 93 years.

One of my Granduncles Christopher was born on 9th Dec 1897, got baptised on 25th Dec of same year.
On school register, his birthday was given as Christmas Day. So BAPTISM date became known as his birthday.

Ireland / Re: "Relative" on the census

To Ghostwheel,
Is it possible that the child was with her mother's relations on census night.
The other possibility is that child was looked after near where her father worked.
Having the same surname is not proof that both families are related.

I think something that is hard to find brings more joy, when it is found.

I was looking for a relative's gravestone and much to my amazement, I found my neighbour's ancestors, dating back to early 1800's. I wrote down all the names and dates.
It turned out that the grave stone that I was looking for, was moved into a locked area.
I got to see it at a later date.

The 15 year old mother chose Family to rear her child, there was no legal adoption available back then. I guess that child was never told, who her blood parents were.
These sort of things make family history more interesting.

Ireland / Re: Tracing Callaghans
« on: Wednesday 25 April 18 23:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'm trying to trace my 5th grt grandparents James and Catherine Callaghan.
At somepoint they go to England and in 1841 are living in Loughborough, Leicestershire.
James Callaghan is listed as born abt 1811 Ireland and wife Catherine is listed as born abt 1820
They have the following children living with them.
Mary Ann Callaghan born abt 1823 Ireland
David Callaghan born 1835 Ireland
James Callaghan born 1838 Ireland
Celia Callaghan born 1840 Loughborough, Leic, England (My 4th grt grandmother)
living with them also is a David Callaghan born abt 1811 Ireland (James brother?)
There is a census in 1871 for a David Callaghan born abt 1820 (James brother or son?) He lists his birthplace as Lancashire.
Unfortunately James I think dies in 1843 and no other census records can be found on the family so I don't have a chance to pinpoint if they listed a more specific location in Ireland.
On Daughter Celia's GRO record her mothers maiden name is given as Hilmartin/Kilmartin?
Any help appreciated.
Welcome to rootschat
Mary Anne Callaghan is more likely his sister or other relative. Her age is too close.
James is 12 years her senior and Catherine is only 3 years older
Be aware that the surname Callaghan may begin with O' in some Irish records.
