Carlow / Re: House search in Bagnelastown in the 1850s
« on: Friday 26 January 18 08:41 GMT (UK)  »
The Irish Times, 4 May 1875, advertised the the sale of the interest in the lease of Laurel Lodge -
"a very compact slated cottage residence with 6 Irish acres of land .... The house, which is beautifully situated an English mile from Carlow ...".

Almost all the references in the newspapers refer to the Fitzmaurice family

I think that the Advertisment is for a different house, which happens to share name. English mile from Carlow would not have Bagnelstown address
Modern name for Bagnelstown is Muine Bheag, most locals still call it Bagnelstown.

Could the mother be in jail and shown on census as initials. Poor people got jail for very minor crimes.
In the Irish census 1901 1911 initials only used for people held in institutions.
I do not have access to any English census

Would they have been in Castlebar jail before being sent elsewhere?
Their crime may have been mentioned in a newspaper.

Try surname variation Cain, if you do manage to find newspaper archive.

Did anyone notice that no person is showing their teeth.
Picture quality is very good. Considering it is around a century in age.

My father told us that Granny came from Glenmore and her mother came from Tullagher.
Eventually found marriage certs, which proved the other way round. Granny married in Tullagher.
To add to confusion both surnames are very common in that area.

TP's?
Do you mean the Tithe Applotment books.
Only people with enough land to pay a tithe are listed. Anyone with less than 1(Irish) acre is not listed.

A carpenter might only have had a yard and shed.

Tithes were a tax on arable land. For example a farmer of an acre had to pay, but a farmer who had hundreds of acres of pastureland was not liable

In 1911 census, almost all farming families who has adult children still living in homestead, were Farmers sons or farmers daughters.
