Family History Beginners Board / Re: How to find my half-sister with little info
« on: Wednesday 06 March 19 20:43 GMT (UK)  »
I suggest that you use Anc*stry DNA test.
Your sister might be also looking for her relations.
I do wish you are able to find each other.

Saw the idea on programme called Long Lost Families.

Ireland / Re: The expression that someone may have taken the soup

I've read about this occurring - I think this happened one of the people covered  in an episode of the UK version of WDYTYA . I cant remember you it was at the moment - but the family was Catholic and the out of the blue a child appeared in a protestant school, and later moved over to England. (poss. somewhere in Wexford ...)

I think this instance may have been after the great famine - but it seems this type of conversion also took place for reasons of better education and employment opportunities
Shane

The WDYTYA programme was on a Redman actress. One of her ancestors was a St Leger also known as Salinger. St Legers lived in Doneraile Co Cork and then one moved to Wexford.
The Wexford part of family were Catholic and then Turned Protestant.

Carlow / Re: Brien family of Myshall

Have you tried variations of surname Brien such as Bryan and O'Brien.

I came across one couple that had a very big family. The mother's name changed Brien Bryan and o'Brien. Lucky for me the father has an unusual surname and they stayed living in same house.

Good luck with your research.

The Dads did go to baptisms
Baptisms took place so soon after births that in lots of cases, the father brought the baby.
The new mother did not always attend.
My baptism was on at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon. My mother and older siblings did not attend. My father and Godparents attended a Hurling Match afterwards. I was only a few days old. My God mother told me about the Match. Some of the other babies had both parents in attendance.
Ceremony was performed by Hospital Chaplain. My mother who had four children did not attend any her children's baptisms.

The Lighter Side / Re: WDYTYA - Robert Rinder

Overall I liked the way the progamme went.
The date of birth issue made sense in the circumstances. I really liked Robert's reaction to grandfather wanting his real birth date corrected for the records. The Judge came out with reaction to all the 1930 birth years.
The wedding invitation and response were special. Ten pounds was quite a sum in those years.

Looking forward to next episode.
