Anglesey Lookup Requests / Methodist Minister Amlwch/Trefdraeth resources?
« on: Monday 09 July 18 19:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

A friend living on Anglesey talked with a Methodist Minister (who serves the area we are looking in) about my 5X Great Grandfather, Emanuel Evans.  Trying to find record of which chapels he served in.  I know he was in Amlwch, then possibly Bethel Chapel in Bodorgan, and then ministered at his home, Tyn Llwyn, in Trefdraeth.  The minister recommended a book called "The history of Methodists in Wales", by William Roberts, but said it is a rare book.  Have any of you run across this book or know where I can look?  I did a search in the National Library of Wales (no luck), and have sent an email to the Anglesey Archives, and am awaiting a response from them.

Any other suggestions for resources I should check that would show non-conformist Ministers on Anglesey from the late 1700's and early 1800's

Have seen his bond, as well as his wife Elizabeth’s a couple of years later, thank you!

Will check out the other link that was sent.

Does that database cover Nonconformist chapels as well or is there another database for those?  The last couple of children were definitely baptized in Calvinistic Methodist chapels, and Emanuel himself worked in some.

Thank you for this great resource!!!

Anglesey / Evans - Amlwch and Trefdraeth, Anglesey

Hi everyone!

Trying to learn more about my 5X Great Grandfather, Emanuel Evans.  He was born around 1763, possibly in Llanrhaeadr, Denbighshire.  Married Elizabeth Jones of Llansannan (Denbighshire) in 1785 in her parish, I do have their marriage record.

Emanuel next shows up in 1801 in Amlwch, Anglesey.  He is listed as a miner in Baptism Records for his children.  Several were baptized in Amlwch (not sure what chapel - which could be very important):

Robert bap. 27 Oct 1787 Amlwch
Griffith bap. 19 May 1792 Amlwch
Thomas bap. 28 Jun 1794 (died 20 Nov 1797) Amlwch
Hannah bap. 4 Mar 1797 (died 24 Nov 1797) Amlwch
Thomas bap. 10 Nov 1798 Amlwch
Evan bap. 21 Feb 1801 Amlwch
William bap. 24 Mar 1803 Rhosmeirch (Ebenezer Chapel?)
Joseph bap. 7 Oct 1806 Trefdraeth (Bethel Chapel) Father listed as a Minister of the Gospel.

So I started to look into Emanuel being a minister, and sure enough he was.  He was a Calvinistic Methodist Minister, found original documents at the Anglesey Archives, written by him in 1801 in Amlwch - not sure what chapel.  Have heard that he had a disagreement with someone in the chapel and headed south.  Bethel chapel was built around 1805, not sure if he was a minister there at all, but it was very nearby and corresponds with the Baptism locations of his children.  We know that he was then a minister at the family home of Tyn Llwyn in Trefdraeth, and held a Sunday School there for many years.  He died at the home in 1836, and the home passed to his son Thomas (my GGGG Grandfather).  About 10 family members died at the home between 1836 and 1843, and all are buried at St. Bueno's parish church in Trefdraeth.

I have seen a record of Emanuel giving to the British and Foreign Bible Society, and also his name on an Electoral Roll.  Can't find the reference, but someone sent me a paragraph from a book talking about Emanuel being a fluent speaker, and that he was a well-liked minister.

My questions are:
What Amlwch chapel were the older kids baptised at?
What Amlwch chapel did Emanuel minister at?
What is Emanuel's birthdate?  Was he born in Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch?
Who were Emanuel's parents?

Thank you for any help you can give!!!

Thanks everyone!  Hadn’t seen the bonds before so those were great finds.

Am still looking for birth/baptism info on both Emanuel and Elizabeth, so let me know if you have any suggestions for where I should look moving forward.  Thank you!

Denbighshire / Evans/Jones marriage, Llansannan Parish 1785
« on: Friday 29 June 18 03:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

Have hit a brick wall, and would love some help.  Found the marriage record for my 5X Great Grandparents, Emanuel Evans and Elizabeth Jones.  They were married in Llansannan Parish on 8 Aug, 1785.

He is listed as a bachelor of Llanrhaiadr, and she is of Llansannan Parish.  Parents names are not listed, and I haven't found any other documents with parents names listed.  I do know from census records and some other documents that they were both born around 1763/1764.  Emanuel became a Calvinistic Methodist Minister, and I have seen a document that he wrote from 1801 when he was a minister in Amlwch on Anglesey.  They had many children baptized in Amlwch, and then the family moved to Trefdraeth, Anglesey, at some point in the early 1800's and he preached out of his home for years.

Looking specifically to trace both Emanuel and Elizabeth back a generation.  Other than birth years, and their marriage record, I am afraid I don't have anything to go off of.  Hoping that Emanuel/Emmanuel/Mannuel is an uncommon name which may be helpful in the search.

Thank you for any help/guidance!

Thank you Alan!  That does help me with birth and death dates to go into the Records Office with.  I appreciate your time and energy in this search!

Kindest regards,
Heather

Thank you everyone!  You have been most helpful.

Tall Al - the holes you have found are some that we have found as well.  I do not know much more about his wife Mary (that could be them at Tan y Foel), other than she was born around 1833 in Llangeinwen, Anglesey.  I can see them in the census records in the Village of Brynsiencen in the 1861 census, and at 19 Well Street in Gerlan in the 1871 census, with children Thomas, Evan, Mary, Owen, Emmanuel, and Robert John.  In the 1881 census, they are at 16 Goronwy St., Gerlan, with Thomas, (son Evan passed away in 1873) Mary, Owen, Emmanuel, Robert, and Evan (7 years old).  1891 the family is at the same address, with Evan, Mary, Emmanuel, Robert, and Evan living in the home.

I have not yet traced her back before the 1861 census, or she and Evan (GGG) after the 1891 census.  I do think it may be them in the 1901 census at Tan y Foel, so I'll continue digging into that.  His son Evan (my GG Grandfather), no wonder I am confused, married Elizabeth sometime between the 1891 and 1901 in Gerlan.  In 1901 I have Evan and Elizabeth, along with Evan Thomas Evans, Maggie M, and Robert John (my Great Grandfather) at 6 Goronwy St. in Gerlan.  In the 1911 census they are at 54 Cilhaul Terrace in Mountain Ash, Glamorgan.

I have Evan Evans (GGG) death record from 1904, but no mention of Mary.  Most of the men are listed as Quarrymen, possibly/probably working at Penrhyn at some point, which may have been their motivation to move south.  I am hoping to get to the Gwynedd Records office to look at the Penrhyn documents - would like to confirm that they worked there, and what their involvement was in the strikes.

On our ancestry tree, it shows Evan Evans (GG) as having a death date of 1940 in Mountain Ash, Wales.  I do not see any supporting documentation there, but it is possible.

Thank you for your help!  Let me know if there is any other info that would be helpful and I will try to fill in what we know if possible, but I don't think I have much more than what is above.

Thank you everyone!  Looks like you are all spot on with identifying the family, and did give me some new information - Emmanuel Evans death date for example.  Much appreciated!

I can piece together some of the other death dates that you found...
I believe there was quite a sad time in the family with regards to this group.

"Thomas Evans - age 43 - 28 May 1842
William Evans - age 6 months - 20 Feb 1843
Thomas Evans - age 3 - 3 Nov 1841
Emmanuel Evans - age 2 - 13 March 1838
Elizabeth Evans - age 25 - 4 December 1839"

Thomas was married to Elizabeth, who passed away in 1839.
Thomas and his son Evan (not on the list and is my GGG Grandfather) moved in with Elizabeth - who was the widow of Emmanuel.
Thomas passed away in 1842.
Elizabeth (Thomas' mother) died right after the census in 1841.
Not sure where little Emmanuel and William fit into the mix, first I've heard their names - but that doesn't mean they don't fit in there :-)

So, the grandfather, grandmother, mother, father, and possibly 3 siblings of my GGG Grandfather Evan Evans all passed away with a few years, leaving him quite alone as a young boy (I believe he was around 7 during the census).  In the next census it shows Evan (or an Evan with the same name - which I realize is quite likely) as a servant on a farm on Anglesey.  What a life he must have had.

I looked up the burial registration for the young Evan (born 1860) and that record does look like it belongs to the right guy, meaning he is buried at Glanogwen.  I have the death record for his father, Evan Evans, having passed away in November 1904 at between 66 and 69 years of age, but cannot locate where he is buried (record says Llanllechid).  Anything that popped up in your searches that may have been related to him?  My thought is that he is buried at Glanogwen as well.  Most of his children were baptized there over a span of quite a few years.  We cannot locate him in the parish death records though.

As for Tyn Llwyn, any clue if it is still standing?  Would love to be able to drive by it in a few weeks when we visit.  Sounds like it was in the family for a while.

Thank you all for your help.  It is exciting to find information on a large group of family members like this.  I have been so impressed by this group of wonderful people willing to help in the search.
