New Zealand Completed Requests / The theories of Alexander Edward Fox in New Zealand
« on: Tuesday 06 February 18 07:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there. I'm trying to build a timeline and trying to build up a timeline for my family. I'm having some doubts and confused over little bits that I've found and trying to rule out. I'll post the timeline first.

4th April 1904
The earliest concrete thing I have about Alexander Edward Fox is that he married in St Paul’s Church, Christchurch, New Zealand, age 27 from Perth WA. He was salesman living 88 Salisbury Street Christchurch.

His wife Marie Elisabeth Schaner (Marie Elizabeth Schauer) was age 24 was born in Gippsland, Victoria, living 17 Etin Place, Christchurch.

The concrete facts.

1907 Son Leslie born in Christchurch
???Alexander sometime moves to Victoria Australia???
1909 Alexander lives Melbourne as a “traveller”
1910 Daughter Constance was born in Melbourne
1912 Son Leonard was born.
1914 The Foxes having moved and his occupation now ‘Manager’ in Malvern East, Victoria

Rudolph Schauer’s WW1 papers have his sister Mrs Fox as living in Malvern, Victoria. Then crossed out and updated it with % N.Z Farmers (gpo?) Ashburton. Rudolph’s brother Carl was his employer before he joined the army. Living with him at his place Clyde Quay Hotel, Wellington.

------------------------------------------------
This next part is a little sketchy.
What’s confusing is why on the WW1 1916, Alexander appears as a Publican & living in Ashburton. I thought that might have meant he might have tried his hand in bar work and that he was the A E Fox with the licence to the Pioneer Hotel.

June-1915 Mr A E Fox joins the local telephone exchange No 59, Pioneer Hotel. Hokitika

December 1915 Alexander applies for a licence for the Pioneer Hotel, Hokitika. It’s granted the next month. It was a new building (By 1918 is has changed hands)
My trouble is Hokitika, New Zealand is on the other side of the Island?

Sometime 1916 - Appears on the NZ Army Roll - Publican. Care of NZ Co-Operatrive, Ashburton.

March 1916 (Only 2 months later) - Had advertisement in the Ashburton paper looking for a lost item. At Farmer’s Co.op

------------------------------------------------

Back to the Concrete facts.

1919 – Alexander Appears on Two addresses in two of the same year’s electoral rolls.
* - 110 Moore Street, Ashurton Canterbury, NZ
* - The British Hotel, Lyttleton, Canterbury, NZ

March 1919, Farmers Co-op Association of Canterbury was asked by A E Fox to auction off 110 Moore Street property. 6 Bedroom home

The 1919 Electoral Roll had several names living at ‘Webbs’ British Hotel on different pages. H Webb being the proprietor who had the licence between June 1919 and Sept 1922

1. Alexander Edward Fox
2. Marie Elizabeth fox
3. Annie Catherine Webb - Marie's sister
4. Harold William Webb - Proprietor
5. Annie Davey - Marie and Annie's Mother.

Alexander possibly had sold his house and had planned to stay a few weeks at Marie’s sisters place, who lived in her Husband’s British Hotel, taking care of their mother Annie Davey.

Aug 1919. Ashburton Guardian
“Mr A E Fox - of the Hardware department of the Ashburton Branch of N.Z Farmer’s Co-op., LTD  transfers to Blenheim. Co-Workers gave him and his wife a travelling rub and a Wedgewood cream and sugar service.

1924 Daughter Gwen is born in Christchurch

1925 Annie Davey, nee Schauer/Born Clark passes away in Christchurch.
Her funeral took place at 15 River Road, Avonside.

1926, An October paper mentions Marie Fox to visit Australia with her Daughter for a few week holiday. Passenger list on the Manuka to Melbourne 22/10/1962 has both on board. M E Fox and Gwen.
1928- Alexander is living at 15 River Road, Avon, Canterbury, NZ

The move to Australia

July 1928 Son Leslie Fox Takes the Ulimaroe to Sydney on his own. Salesman 21
November 9th 1928. Leonard Fox aged 17, takes the Maheno to Sydney.
November 12th 1928. An Auction is held at his house to sell all of his stuff (found in newspaper)

November 16th, 1928. Alexander, Marie and Gwen travel on the Ulimaroa. From Christchurch to Sydney
   Alex 52 Hardware Manager
   Mare 47 Domestic Duties.
   Child (Gwen) 4yr Old.
Unsure where their other daughter, Elsie Meryl Constance Fox went, but she appears in NSW few years later.

Thanks for all those Johnf04,

I didn't know Gustave went to America. That's very interesting.

I'd seen the military file and the probate, but not the newpaper articles. I'm not sure about Frederick dying in S.A. Especially with a more German sounding name.

The death of Carl Albert in Taihape. Much more of a remote location his previous work as a Hotel Owner in Wellington. Those American ships using NOK listings that far back is so handy.
I know his daughter was Ellinor Alice Elizabeth Schauer, and that she married a man named John Alphege Fagan, who I think died in 1971. I think she died 1994. But I haven't saved my sources properly. I never found reference to any Children from then. I'm not sure they had any but it would be hidden from record. It would be nice to one day find one of my cousins from the Schauer lines, but I'm not sure is there are any to find.

Already looking again since I posted, I found a couple things.

H Schauer
Birth 1873, leaving on a 1901 Ship to Burnie. More likely Herman.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q25D-N3XC

Female Schauer. Possibly Marie. (Born abt 1880, Victoria) on a boat in April.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-61K9-5DG

Her brother Carl I think on the same ship.  (Born abt 1874, Victoria)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-61K9-5G2

There’s a Mrs Schauer with a male child on a 1914 ship.  The Same port Marie and Carl used. May a have been Herman’s wife and one of his sons on a visit to Melbourne?
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-61C9-DD3

R G Schauer born Australia 1884 with a B L Schauer coming to Australia 1930. (2 years after Marie had movied there, and perhaps shortly after the Webb Family, since they lived the rest of their lives in NSW)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6189-4ML
Gustave Rudalph married a Bertha Laura Watson 1922 in NZ, and she died in NSW 1960. Not sure what happened to Gustave. Don’t know whether they had children.

Frederick Schauer may have never went to New Zealand.
Annie Davey sure did, though I don’t know about her husband. The fact her baby is named after her previous husband might say their relationship broken down before she born. Or maybe as she was illiterate, she mistaken the question on the forms?

She Schauers were such a unique name. Some of them even got into trouble around WW1 for having names that sounded too German.

Hey Lucy2, I don't mean to stretch you with old mysteries of old certain families. I hope you're enjoying your NZ holidays.

I'm attempting to merge my relative Alexander Edward Fox born 1877, Perth to the Alexander Fox in this that born 1877 WA Perth.

Herman Julius Schauer before he came to Australia.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=786892.msg6421879#msg6421879

You can see what I'm trying to do is understand how and Australian Mr Fox and a Victorian Ms Schauer marred in New Zealand. My biggest effort is to find out more about Alexander, but I'm also interested int the life of the Schauers since Maries family played a larger roll in the family's life..

Edited in: The parents of Annie Clark.. a side project.

New Zealand Completed Requests / The Schauer family's Migration to New Zealand
« on: Monday 05 February 18 23:42 GMT (UK)  »
This family relates to my Prussian and Irish ancestors who raised their family in Victoria, Australia and for some reason all migrated out to New Zealand. It overlaps with some other threads I’ve been in. The Parents were Herman Julius Schauer and Annie Clark, who married in Victoria and had a big family.

1872. Herman Julius Schauer
1874. Carl Albert Schauer “Charlie”
1876. Annie Catherine Schauer
1877. Frederick William Schauer
1879. Marie Elizabeth Schauer (My line)
1881. Auguste Fredericka Schauer
1885. Gustave Rudalph Schauer

From what I can tell. Their daughter Auguste died as a child and father Herman died in 1888.

His wife Annie remarried to a John Davey in 1890 and have a one child, although it has the father on the cert as Julius, when he’d been dead for years and Annie already remarried.

1894 Maria Elizabeth Schauer

Not sure what happened to John Davey. The next time I spot any of them, they are in New Zealand appearing on Papers pleasem working in hotels, getting elected, fighting in the First World War. Getting married, having kids, ect. I always wondered what became of Annie’s youngest daughter to John, and how the Schauer family made it out to New Zealand. It was only chance that I found Annie Davey living with her daughter Marie Elizabeth Fox an Annie Catherine Webb in the same hotel. 1919.

So far I’ve found a man named Mr Schauer (single, laborour) leaving Melbourne for Wellington 23 Aug 1907 on the Wimmera. He was 36, which makes him born 1871. I think this is the Eldest, Herman Julius.

The Schauer family must have been out there earlier though, since Marie married in 1904 and Annie 1907. Annie and Marriage marriage certs appear under the name Schaner. Took me a long time to break through from Schaner to Schauer. Amazing luck I broke through with wildcards in the Vic BDM.

The earliest marriage is between Carl Schauer and his wife Ellen Goodwin in 1901.
Frederick seemed like the only one who stayed in Victoria.

Seem to be right Twiggy,

It was a side note on some of Uncles old research. Never really got to the bottom of Henry's story. It doesn't really match what we know so far. It just seemed that there weren't many mentions of Fullbrooks in the NZ BDM. Only one marriage and one death in all of their online records appear not to be directly related to W W Fullbrook.

Hi Lucy, I'll do just that :) I'll hold onto my Money in the meantime. Be glad to hear that timeline. Thank you so much again!

Twiggy, I think you might be interested in this little bit. What do you think about the article at the bottom of this page?

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/HBH18901006.2.7?query=%22Henry%20Harper%20Fullbrook%22

It's about a Henry Harper Fullbrook, in the Hawkes Bay Herald. 6 October 1890. A boy getting into trouble with his friend on Tennyson Street. I had that William Wood Fullbrook passed away in Tennyson, Napier, New Zealand. I don't find many Fullbrooks anywhere. This one is slippery since I can't find any records of him other than this paper. If he's a young boy in 1890, He'd fit perfectly between the other Fullbrook children. And though he isn't a baby, it out account for a 4th child. He may have died young.

I won't know until I see the divorce papers. But just something to think about :)

Three Another Article mentioning him possibly

I'll have to find these original custody documents. I believe she went under the name Moore when she could but ultimately used Fullbrook in all her documents into the future. It's not very clear what happened with William after that. Apparently he died 16 Nov Tennyson, Napier, New Zealand.

On a side note. I googled the named Gordon John Heath, who seemed to have married Agnes' great granddaughter Merle Mary Fullbrook. Apparently he died in 2011. So I looked up the white pages for Heaths in that area and there weren't many. The first one I rang turned out to be Merle, still alive in her 80's :) Instant way to make a new relative. So that was a nice chat. I can send her photos of Agnes and Agnes Ann now and hopefully she'll send what she has soon.

Fortunately I'd done research on William Wood Fullbrook before I realized he wasn't my relative, so now someone can still benefit. Much of what I learned about Agnes is through this Forum too. So the whole family is benefiting so much. Thanking everyone again!

Twiggy,
That's a very interesting piece of info. I must have missed that part. If she left William by 1890 she might either have had the child also from another affair? But I feel as thought here is still enough room between 1885 and 1890 to fit in a child with William. This mystery child isn't easy to pin down. The NZ BDM isn't as user friendly as the NSW and Vic BDMs are.

I haven't any Gorman's in the family, nor have I come across that name before. What kind of theory are you brewing up?
