Derbyshire / Re: report in newspaper .. when????

Hi,

You don't say which paper this is from so maybe you don't know.  Though Whitwell is in Derbys, Worksop is in Notts and both are nearer Sheffield than they are to Derby or Nottingham.  It could have been in  the Derby Evening Telegraph, the Nottingham Evening Post, or a local paper from Sheffield or Mansfield.  Then there are the national papers.  Obvously identifying the paper would help enormously.

Historical copies of most local papers are kept by libraries, typically on microfilm that you could skim through.

Do you have his exact DOB?  He would have still been 59 into 1940, up to his birthday.

Regards,

Sherwood.

Here's a link to a wartime recollection by someone who worked at RR Hucknall during WW2.  Mention of an opportunistic enemy bomber but no serious damage done.

Nottinghamshire / Re: DIXON STREET RADFORD NOTTINGHAM
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 23:31 GMT (UK)  »
Haven't seen it on a map but old directories suggest Dixon Street was indeed off Norton Street (at or around 37 or 39 Norton Street), on the west side between Ilkeston Road and Denman Street.  It must have been small/insignificant as no detail of premises thereon or occupants is shown.

Probably a wild card but I have a Martin-Cutts connection in my tree.

John Joseph Martin, b 1867, Chesterfield, m Elizabeth Hemsley in May 1888.  Her mother was Mary Cutts, but I think that was from a marriage before she became a Hemsley (i.e. not her maiden name).

There's the obvious:

"Who Do You Think You Are" (various artistes)

the poignant:

"The Living Years" (Mike and the Mechanics)

Technical Help / Re: wps files to PDF

Sounds like a corrupt or missing file.  I'm not too familiar with XP and don't use Works but is there an option to repair files if you select Microsoft Works from Add/Remove Programmes in the Control Panel?

HMRC (Revenue and Customs) can ask The Post Office (or other carriers) to open parcels/packets of any size if they suspect that contents are illegal or contraband (e.g. drugs, firearms, explosives) or if they have reason to suspect that Customs Excise duty hasn't been paid (when you buy expensive stuff from overseas).  I'm not sure that they would be bothered by the occasional recorded copy of a TV programme, even though it may indeed be a breach of copyright laws, especially if you haven't dressed it up to look like a product of BBC Enterprises (i.e. a full-blown counterfeit).  At worst I suspect that the item might be impounded/destroyed.  Unless you are exporting hundreds/thousands they aren't going to be knocking on your door; they have got bigger fish to fry, as they say.

You would of course have to check that whatever format you use is playable on the recipient's gear (VCR standards, DVD regions, etc.)

Technical Help / Re: Excel to Gedcom
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 19:50 BST (UK)  »
A csv to GEDCOM programme is likely to need the data in some sort of pre-defined order in Excel to start with.  If the source workbook is not set up to comform, the data would first need to be organised before exporting to csv, so downside has a valid point in regard of spreadsheets being unique.  Of course this doesn't help plums with the apple.

Technical Help / Re: Help!! Can't get my PC up and running!
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 19:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi Nick,

Fair enough, I guess it's a matter of opinion though I guess your personal experience may have made you more wary.  The worst I've had from nearby or overhead thunderstorms is the house alarm going off and needing a power disconnect to reset it.  I'm not saying that lightning can't do damage without direct strike because I know it can.  To unplug or leave alone - it's just a decision based on risk.  Our difference is that I think the risk is low whereas you think it is higher.

Anyway, enough of that, let's get back to the thread topic and hope Tees gets the PC up and running again to continue the important work of genealogy!

Kind regards,

Sherwood.
