Is it:

Hatter (shaper) (mercury)

Presume you know the "mad as a hatter" connection with mercury!

Hi,

I'm looking at a scan of HO107/2150 F329, P6 (Aldwark, Derbyshire) and am struggling to read some of the entries.  I've attached extracts (copyright belongs to The National Archives).

1. Name of street - I think this is The Leadgate but second opinion welcome.
2. Name of head of household, Benjamin S B...
3. Occupation of head "Farmer 424 acres employing... (if it helps, there were five Farm Labourers, two general servants and a nurse).
4. Surname of Thomas B...
5. Birthplace of George Green - Derbyshire, B...
6. Birthplace of Ellen Chadwick, Derbyshire, P...
7. Surname of Eliza.  I think this is Prince but second opinion welcome.

Thanks,

Sherwood

I have a few rellies there.  Wonder whether Nottm FHS has an indexed list/layout.  If not we perhaps need to muster a working party for a few Sunday morning jaunts, armed with printouts from Google Earth.

Sunflower,

I am looking for any information on William Martin and Sophia Marsh, particularly his background. I thought maybe the witnesses would yield clues.

Suzard,

What/where is the record that shows William Martin born Lyons?  I have that noted in my records but no primary source.   The "French Connection" fits with him being involved in lace machinery as I understand Lyons (and Calais) had strong links to Nottingham.  I had wondered whether the enumerator misread Lyons as L'pool - possible?  To a Frenchman I think it would be just Lyon.

Never occurred to me that he might have returned to France periodically (and probably for extended periods if he missed three Censuses).  Do you think this is likely?  Does it suggest relatives still in France that he wanted/needed to see?  Maybe it was to do with work - the smuggling of lace machine parts to France is well documented.

BTW, the OP and I are first cousins, hence chasing the same ancestors.

Hi winegum,

My Lenaghans from Ireland settled in Stamford.  It was just one individual female who went to Nottingham and entered service in Radford.  She married a Nottingham lad so the Lenaghan name ended there (aside of the clan still in Stamford).

Sunflower,

Was the marriage record in Latin or English? I've drawn a blank looking for Haininern.

Hi Susan and welcome to Rootschat!

Regarding the property that your father and uncle bought, do you recall whether it was the whole of what is now the Punchbowl or just one half?  As I previously said, it looks to me like two buildings that have been joined together.  I have no particular connection but am just curious.
