I am so relieved that I'm not the only one! I found Hollington in Staffordshire too, but now I wonder if it's the name of a farm rather than a town or village, so I'm off to NLS to pore over old maps again.

Thank you all for your help and contributions.

As regards the Bolting/Boiling room, there are two references to this in the inventory, only one of which I have shown in the clips. I've compared both and I'm fairly confident it is Bolting and not Boiling. A Bolting house is where flour was bolted, i.e. sifting flour to remove chaff. I would normally associate a Bolting House with a mill, and Richard's father was a miller. Unfortunately, I don't know where the farm is located within the Sutton Coldfield parish, or where Richard's father's mill was located - there are quite a number of possibilities.

I suspect some items are named with local dialect words, and I'm left to puzzle over pootsdebnet skiners, cob irons and the longe peice to shute in. The explanation tor ticknell, given its proximity in the inventory to the references to earthenware I think is spot on.

Thank you :D

Having identified where "Tibbals" is, I am curious to know what exactly if Phillip Stanier's relationship with the farm. His will states:

Quote
Imprimis I give devise and bequeath all all that my Messuage or
Tenement with the Appurtenances wherein I now live and all the Crofts Closes
Leasons Meadows pastures or parcells of inclosed Ground thereunto belonging
unto Thomas Wright of Hollington in the County of Warwick Yeoman and
his Heirs upon special trust and confidence nevertheless and to and for the
several uses following chargable nevertheless with the sum ̅e of forty shillings
p Annum as is herein after menc ̅oned (that is to say) To the use of William Nightingale
the younger of Ardington for and during the term of his natural life and from and
after his decease then to the use of behoof of the first son of the Body of the said William
Nightingale lawfully begotten or to be begotten and the Heirs of such first son lawfully
to be begotten

Does this imply that he owns the farm and is leaving it to Thomas Wright, and after Thomas dies, the farm passes to William Nightingale and his heirs? Phillip describes himslf in his will as a Gentleman.

I'm assuming Ardington means Erdington, but where is Hollington?

I have a will dated 1729 that mentions a place called Tibballs in Kingsbury. I suspect it may be a farm rather than a village or hamlet, but wondered if anyone might have any idea where it might have been. The resident was a Phillip Stanyer, and it is likely that he was there with one of his brothers, one of whom, Nathaniel, also died there.

Other names associated with the property are William Nightingale and Christopher Veazy

Yet another Stanier will! This one is proving difficult in parts as the result of the inventory being written on two sides of one sheet of paper(?) and as a result, the ink has bled through. But here goes. The will is for a Richard Stanier, dated 1661. The full set of images can be seen here:

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBPRS%2FSTAFF%2F007621436%2F00209&parentid=GBPRS%2FSTAFF%2FWILLS%2F339925

for those with appropriate access. I have made some guesses on the letter and words in [..] based on the inventories in other Stanier wills, but I'd like a second opinion on the ones I'm not sure of.

The first item I'm not sure about is "the Chamber over the Bolting House", which raises the question, what on earth is a Bolting House?

The second areas in question are from the Kitchen and the bolting house, for which I have (excluding the valuation):

Quote
One longe table & forme One little table one
   Cubart & two cheres
Item   two pooth & five kettles & a [?]ednet skin [??] &
bastings Ladle & forme other small brass things

and

Item   for ba[?]ken in the said Roomse
Item   for one grate f[?]ar shovel & pott geal[?] &
   Tonges two spits & cob=irons
Item   for one [??] paire of sh[??] [??] one little

   In the boltinge house

Looking at it again, the last line I think reads earthen ware.

Thank you for your help and suggestions. I think this is another than can now be safely put to bed.

Except for one question.

Where the will references Sone and Sume (son and sum) there is a horizontal bar over the n and m. I believe that this indicates a contraction of some kind, but I'm not sure what.

Hi Again

I have a few pieces of this will I need a little help with. The original images are at:
https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBPRS%2FSTAFF%2F007622677%2F00181&parentid=GBPRS%2FSTAFF%2FWILLS%2F359665 but I've attached clips of the parts I can't quite decipher.

First, there's this section of inventory for which I have:

Quote
Item in ye pantry & sellor
      6 [??] 8 bags
           1 beam [?] [??] 3   1   4   0
           Wheels 3 barills

The second part is also a section of inventry:

Quote
Item   fether[?] fowle   0   5   0

Item   1 [?]eane
   1 tumbrill
   2 plows   5   5   0
   2 harrows
Item   3 yokes 2 chains
   4 Coliers & hornes   0   10   0
   4 paire of tra[?]

And the last part of inventory:

Quote
Item   3 pare & 1 [??] shirte   1   6   8
Item   2 duzin of napkins   0   8   0
Item   5 pillobe[??]   0   2   6

My thoughts are possibly over shirt, and pillo[w]cases

Finally, the names of two of the witnesses:

Quote
[??] Vesee
William [??]

This will is interesting in that it helps confirm that Margery's maiden name is Heath, and that the kinswoman referred to in her son's will is actually Margery's sister.  The will also references her husband's will, which I previously didn't know about, not surprising because I had previously not looked at all the name variants when I did the initial research on this family several years ago, and which I have now found.::)  Sadly the inventory on this one is tricky as the writing has bled through on the page, so I will be back for more help in a wee while  :)

It's also clear from this will and the other's I've discovered (so far) that the family's milling activities that I had hoped to find out more about have moved in mixed farming; a little disappointing as I'm trying to link back through to this family via my own Stonyer millers. However, I do still have a couple more branches to investigate ...
