Sorry I wasn't following - thanks :)

I can't find  Margaret/Maggie Myron birthday on SP to buy the certificate - do you see it?
I've already tried to explain that her birth is registered as Margaret Sellar, not Margaret Myron, because the name of the father of an illegitimate child can only be included on the child's birth certificate if he accompanies the mother when she goes to register the birth, and signs the certificate at that time.

It is in Botriphnie, Banffshire 1858, district 148, no 15.

Just so.

I think that the parents of Margaret/Maggie Myron or McMeeking were Charles Lennox Myron 1839-1917 and Mary Sellar; and that she was born in Botriphnie on 5 September 1858 and registered as Margaret Sellar. (As she was illegitimate she could only have been registered as Myron if her father had accompanied her mother to the registrar's when she went to register the birth, and signed the register at the same time.)

At FreeCEN https://freecen1.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl there is a family at Tennanton, Botriphnie in the 1851 census consisting of James Sellar, widower, 53, blacksmith, with six children including Mary Ann, aged 12, and his 80-year-old mother. Have a look at the original document at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (SP).

I think these could be - probably are - Margaret/Maggie Myron or McMeeking's mother and grandparents. Look at her birth certificate on SP. Was Margaret/Maggie born at Tennanton? If so, then it's quite understandable why she was taken in by her father's parents, because her mother's mother was dead.

I think you will find that Mary Ann was the daughter of James Sellar and Barbara Garden, baptised 29 December 1838 in Botriphnie. She married Alexander Bowie in Botriphnie in 1863 and died in Grange in 1879 aged 40. Check her marriage certificate on SP to see if she was living at Tenanton.

James Sellar, mmn McPherson, died in Botriphnie in 1889 aged 87 (if you believe the deaths index at SP) or on 26 May 1889 aged 88 (if you believe the death notice in the 'Elgin Courant'). Check his death certificate on SP to see if he was the widower of Barbara Garden.

Right ok, so I think I know where you are. Are you saying Charles Lennox Myren
1839–1917
BIRTH 23 JUN 1839 • Dufftown, Mortlach, Banff, Scotland
DEATH 23 JUN 1917 • Hillside Farm, Mortlach, Banff, Scotland

is Margaret Myron (at Earnfold, Mortlach in 1871) her father??

Thanks,
Kirsty

Your Margaret Myron is at Earnfold, Mortlach in 1871 with her probable father Charles L Myron and her grandmother Ann Myron. In 1901 Charles L is still at Earnfold, unmarried, with his sister Margaret. He died in Mortlach in 1917.

I think I have found her. The thing is, all these Myron's are ancestors to me! so it is very much a puzzle putting them all together. I found one Myron-to-Myron marriage where one Myron married their great uncles' daughter. I guess it wasn't unusual in those days.

Margaret Myron
1825–1909
BIRTH ABT. 1825 • Mortlach, Banffshire
DEATH 6 JUN 1909 • 73 balcombe street, Dufftown, Banffshire, Scotland

?

note - John Myrons death - he is related being my 1st cousin x4 removed.

If Margaret/Maggie Myron was 24 when she married in 1883, how would someone born eleven years later, in 1894, fit into things?

Let's have a look.

Mary Jane Barclay or Myron, mother's maiden surname Kellas, died in Dufftown in 1983, aged 88.

Mary Jane Barclay and her twin sister Helen were born in Keith in 1894. Their mother's maiden surname isn't in the index. However there are three Barclay children, mother's surname Kellas, born in Keith in 1897, 1900 and 1904, and Alexander Barclay married Mary R Kellas in Keith in 1892. In 1891 the family is in Hill Street, Keith.

Mary Jane Barclay married Charles Myron in Mortlach in 1931. There are three births of Myrons with mother's surname Barclay, in 1930, 1936 and 1938.

I couldn't resist a look at their marriage certificate. Charles Myron was 55, son of James Myron and Margaret Sutherland. Mary Jane Barclay was 36, daughter of Alexander Barclay and Mary Kellas. So Charles Myron was born about 1875/1876 and cannot be the one who fathered Margaret/Maggie Myron when he was less than 10 years old.

This Charles Myron was with his mother and three brothers at Glack of Clunymore, Mortlach, in 1901. He died on 2 January 1939 and is buried in Mortlach with his parents, brothers and other relatives.

Your Margaret Myron is at Earnfold, Mortlach in 1871 with her probable father Charles L Myron and her grandmother Ann Myron. In 1901 Charles L is still at Earnfold, unmarried, with his sister Margaret. He died in Mortlach in 1917.

Hi all,

Thank you for your replies. I also have a specific question -

I can't remember if I spoke to Edith Myron years ago but I was in touch with Norma Elizabeth (Myron) Jordan, in Durban and spoke to her on the phone on a number of occasions.  Norma sent me some old photos which i would have sent copies of on to George at the time .  I thought I had returned the originals to Norma but was horrified to come across them a while ago and now I really want to get them back into the familys hands in South Africa.  I know that Norma had a son and daughter and despite receiving an email from the son following her death, I just cannot find it.

Can anyone help?

Norma is the daughter of James and Ivy Myron.  They lived at 448 Frere Road in Durban  (Kwa Zulu Natal 4001) .  I thought family might still own it however it looks as though the property now is a child care centre.  Amy (Birch) Myron was her paternal grandmother.

Hello,

I'm tracing Myron's in SA. Historic and recent. If anyone else is researching this surname in SA please let me know
