Yeoman and Coxswain would mean he was a Petty Officer while holding those positions. As a guess also Captain of the Mizzen Top equates to being in charge of what we now call "part of ship" which in today's Navy is a Petty Officer also,so could be a bit tricky to pin down when he was rated.

Photo 2 is not SS; it is German Panzer (Tank) uniform.
Correct,Wehrmacht Panzer units had the Totenkopf skull and crossbones collar insignia, but could be confused with the SS Totenkopf Division.SS units had the runes on the right collar to tell them apart.

Once you get his record, contact the Submarine Museum and they will have more information about the boats he served on.

Ayrshire / James BARBOUR-New Cumnock
« on: Monday 04 February 19 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have hit that brick wall and looking for help/advice.
Looking for my 2 x Grandad James Barbour born in Dundonld in 1862,he married an Eliza Ferguson in 1883 in New Cumnock, she died in 1896 and he remarried in 1897 to a Mary Hutchinson Brown born Glaston Ayrshire in 1867,where they had 4 children between 1898 and 1907 to go with the 6 from his previous marriage.
I have them in the 1911 census still in New Cumnock but cant find anything about James,Mary or their 4 kids after that, obvious thinking is that they emigrated but struggling to find info with shipping lists etc.Wondering if anyone might be able to give help or advice please.

Armed Forces / Re: Photo deciphering. Which war and what type of vessel?

With the open bridge I'm more inclined to think it is WW1, but have you downloaded WCW's service record, this might provide an answer: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8575952

Martin

Most British warships bellow battleship size had open bridges during ww2.This does look like a tug and definitely not a Motor torpedo boat.Looking at the uniforms I would suggest this is WW1.

Reference the C & A,just had a look at my more modern service record and I don't think it would of changed much over the years, these are what you would find under the Headers:-
 Character            Ability
VERY GOOD                    SUPERIOR (ABOVE AVERAGE)
VERY GOOD*                  SATISFACTORY (AVERAGE)
GOOD                            MODERATE ( BELOW AVERAGE)
FAIR                              INFERIOR (INEFFICIENT)
INDIFFERENT
BAD

As for the FE for age, thats got me stumped.
