The 1st Battalion 72nd Seaforth Highlanders were stationed in Cape Town in 1814/15 if that is of any use to you.

Due to his age i think you can rule out being in one of the "teeth" arms (Infantry,Armoured or Artillery) as those generally recruited the younger lads. With the lack of identifying badges it looks like asking the MOD for his papers assuming you know his date of birth, you could be waiting some time though.

Armed Forces / Re: Royal Marines. What is his rank please?

Hms Immortalite was a cruiser based in the China Station so your relative would of been in Hong Kong around that time, check out Wikipedia as there is a photo of it firing a broadside in Yokohama harbour during his time onboard.
From the dates given it looks like he was UK based until joining HMS Bedford then Charybdis and Cressey as these were all stationed on the China Station. HMS Cressey transferred to the N.America and West Indies Station, so your relative certainly saw a large part of the world. During the first world war Marines not stationed on ships were put into the Naval Brigade to fight in the trenches to shore up an army manpower issue, Marshal Sault is a mystery.
As mentioned before, the two chevrons indicate a Corporal, onboard ships they would man or even command 1 or 2 of the main gun turrets as well as as being put ashore into any trouble spots as needed as well as controlling undisciplined sailors !

Armed Forces / Re: Which Medals?
« on: Monday 28 September 20 14:24 BST (UK)  »
The suspenders on both (the part from which the medal itself is suspended) is distinctive and is not the straight bar suspender of the Boer war medals (or indeed the Great War medals).

The South Africa 1880 medal may be a contender for the one on the outside?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa_Medal_(1880)

Late Victorian era to Edwardian?

I thought that but the ribbon dosen't match, maybe the British South Africa Company's medal which was issued to British troops, but again the ribbon ?.Also thinking the inner medal might be the Indian General Service Medal or the India medal, but as usual i could be wrong.

He would be a midshipman in charge of all aspects of that part of ship including equipment and sailors, the present day rating would be a Petty Officer(same as an Army Sergeant).
