I am looking for the birth details, mother, father and place of birth, for Thomas Swift. On 1841 census he was living in Friskney, Lincolnshire with Ashlin Cowham and family, aged 25 occupatiion shoemaker. He married in 1841 Susannah Cowham in Friskney Parish Church.

Hi Pioneer,

Thanks for that info, but I think that it is too far from Glossop to be the 'right one'! I have a feeling that he was born in one of the villages around Glossop and put in Glossop so that 'they' would know from which area he came.

Hi Bel,

Thanks for that, if I could find his marriage details I am sure I would be well on the way, but, with his wife being born in Limerick, Ireland, this info is very difficult to obtain from Ireland.

If anyone is going to Kew I think the details of his birth and marriage will be on his army record. I live in hope :'(

Hi Bel,

The info came from the 1881 census for Hougham, Kent.

It states that he was 43 years old and born Glossop, Derby, England.

On 1891 census for Sheffield, Yorks, he states that he was what looks like 57 or it could have been 51, either way 43 + 10 does not make either of these two numbers!  This could have made him born 1833!! I have been told that the earlier census was more probably correct, but who knows!!

If you have more knowledge about correct birthdates, I would be very very pleased to received it.

Family History Beginners Board / Re:Birth of William Woodruff

Hi Chris,

Thanks for that. I had actually found those entries but didn't think they were correct as the places seemed too far from Glossop. I had thought that the country districts surrounding Glossop might be nearer the place!

I had the search done in the hope that he might have been christened! No such luck I am afraid.

The only places I have found him on are the 1881 and 1891 census. Can't even find his marriage to an Irish lady. He was a soldier in the 2nd Batt 3rd Buffs from 1860 to 1880's, so that might explain that.

I have been lookiggn for my great grandfather now for about 6 years, so am getting pretty depserate. lol !!

I am looking for the birth details of Wlliam Woodruff born Glossop Derby c 1838.

Also the death details of this man, probably in Sheffield after 1893, when he was showing as being present at the death of his wife. He was living in Burnt Tree Lane, Sheffield at the time of her death.

I have had a search done by Derbyshire Records Office in the Parish Registers for 3 years either side of 1838, but nothing came up. Also had a Buriel Lookup and nothing showed for that either. I am at a loss as to where to look.   ::)

I am trying to find the birth details of William Woodruff(e) Woodroofe, born c 1838, according to 1881 census. I have had a search done by Derbyshire Records Office for 3 years before and after this date, but no details came up.

He says he was born in Glossop, Derby. Now I know this is a big area and covered lots of smaller areas, but I really am stuck as to know which way to go.

Could some kind person please point me in the right direction? lol ::)

 :)
Can anyone please help me to find the birth details of my great grandfather William Woodruff. On 1881 census in West Hougham, Kent, he states that he was born Glossop, Derby. I have been unable to find this info so far.

He was a regular soldier from 1856 in HEIC (India Campaign) and then in the 2nd Battalion 3rd Buffs from 1860 to 1880's.

He married Mary Brown from Limerick, Ireland in 1860.

Thank you,

Calmar

UPDATE

Mary and William married in St. Michaels, Limerick 1860. William's father was Edward Woodruff. 1841/51 census details would be appreciated for Edward.
