Derbyshire / birth details - William Shaw
« on: Thursday 23 March 06 18:28 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to find out a bit more birth registration info without actually sending off for a certificate?  I am not entirely sure I have got the right person and do not want the expense of a certificate to find out it is the wrong one!

The person I am trying to find out more about is William Shaw born Jul-Aug 1838 registered in Ashbourne.  Vol 19 page 317.  Specifically would like to know parents names.

Any help gratefully received.

thank you both so much!  this really has solved a huge family mystery and I am totally convinced that these are the correct people.  It would appear that the William Shaw orphan is my great great grandfather and then the William born in 1866 is my great grandfather.

William Shaw the elder was apparently a career soldier with the 17th Lancers and we have a photo of him in India in 1870's that could explain why he was listed with his grandparents on the 1871 census - maybe mother had died and father was away with army or maybe both were away with the army? My dad has also remembered now that my grandfather always said there was welsh blood in the family because the family  had Evans' in it.

The thing I find strange is why they waited until adulthood to change name from Shaw to Webberley to Webley and why the 1905 marriage record between William younger and Leah Parsons states grooms age as 32.  My grandfather always said there was a big age gap between his parents and there sure was - 20 years!Oh well I guess some questions can never be answered from bits of paper!

At least now I have some concrete information to work from.  Once again thank you for your time and effort.

sorry - I have been waffling!  ::)

My great grandfather William Webley (born c1872) married Leah Parsons in June 1905. We thought that he was the William of the name change however it now seems that it was his father that the mystery surrounds.

So it is my GGGrandfather that we are trying to find out more about. He too was William.  His middle name was Thomas and his surname in 1905 when his son married was Webley.  However there is one surviving family document which refers to him as William Thomas Shaw.  My grandfather seems to think that at some point he was Shaw-Webberley (or Webley) before finally becoming Webley by the end of the 19th Century.  My grandad also has always maintained that he came from around Uttoxeter and this old family letter says Doveridge which I believe is not far from Uttoxeter.

It is all a bit of a mess really with very little to go on.  He was a career soldier in the 17th Lancers so that could explain why the online census material does not contain him as we know he spent time in India.  The odd thing is that William Webley the younger who married Leah Parsons is also proving tricky to find.

it seems my information was not quite correct.... we thought that my grandfather was talking about his father but in actual fact it was his grandfather.

We now think that he was born in Doveridge (not Dovedale) but do not know when.  It seems he was born William Thomas Shaw and then at some point unknown and for reasons unknown he then became William Webberley and finally William Webley.  He was in the 17th Lancers and he was William Shaw at that time so the name change appears to have happened as an adult.

All a bit of a mystery and with very little specific information.  I have found a family of Webberley in Doveridge on Ancestry.co.uk but the dates/info do not really fit.

Can anyone help me trace my great grandfather?  There is a bit of a mystery surrounding him as we know that he married in 1905 and his name was William Webley and his father was also listed as William Webley.

However we believe that he was born 1872/1873 in Dovedale but there is a chance his name at birth was William (or Thomas William) Shaw.  I am therefore trying to track down his date of birth and any details of his parents.

Thanks.
