Do you have Mary Ann's birth certificate ? There is a Mary Ann Elizabeth John born Haverfordwest in the June quarter of 1867.

Shaun J,

I was looking for a Mary Ann Elizabeth Thomas (she is named as Thomas on her marriage cert).

Is it possible, if her mother was unmarried that they would have used the mother’s maiden name of Johns?  I have no idea how that would have worked back then.

Does MMN stand for Mother’s maiden name?

This is getting stranger and stranger. This matches up with what Shaun J found.

First marriage? Thomas Thomas, 25, tailor, of North Gate, Haverfordwest (father Thomas Thomas, labourer) married Caroline Christmas, 21, (father William Christmas, shoemaker) on 3 June 1865 at St Martin's Haverfordwest.

Thank you Shaun J,

I’ll have a closer look.  I’m really hoping this isn’t them as I want the line of Thomas Thomases to stop 😂

What thinkest though ??

Louisa Maud

On a brief first look this actually looks very promising. Not only are they in St Martin’s parish, but the address is given as Crowhill Road.

My great uncle had it as Coleshill and from somewhere or other I thought it was Cowshill. 😱 definitely worth a closer look.

I have no other censuses for them Louisa Maud, Isn’t it crazy.

Do people really mind Milliepede? These things happen.

It reminds me of a quote that I will have to paraphrase... something like when a lady accused her maid of having a baby out of wedlock the girl answered, ‘but, pardon me Ma’am, it is only a little one.’  ☺️

Oh, good point Milliepede. I didn’t consider that at all.

Yes, that is the census Keyboard 86. My great Uncle (who wrote the family history I keep referring to) does give some information on children who died very young. So that might account for some gaps.

Hello,
I’m in the unusual position (for me) of having a lot of information on these particular ancestors, but i’m still unable to find much about them.

The name of my great great grandmother (Mary Ann Thomas) seems to be so common in the area at the time, that I decided to abandon the search for her birth certificate and head straight for her parents’ marriage certificate.

This is where it gets really frustrating, as I appear to have some reliable information on them, but I cannot find the marriage.

The source of my information is from a brief family history written in 1959 by a great uncle of mine when he was retired (it is a real treasure). The ancestors I am currently searching for happen to be his mother and maternal grandparents.

I have been able to back up some of his information, from his parents’ marriage certificate and from the 1881 census. So I am pretty confident what he writes is accurate.

The marriage I am looking for is between Thomas Thomas (a tailor) born 1840 in Haverfordwest and Elizabeth John/Johns born 1847 in Wiston, Pembrokeshire.  It is believed the marriage took place around 1866, as their first child (Mary Ann) was born 1st May 1867.

I can't think what I might be doing wrong.  Both appear to have been born, lived and died in the same area. So I don’t think it’s a case of their being married somewhere else.

I’d be very grateful for any suggestions. I hope this comment isn’t too long and rambling.

Regards,
Claire.

Thank you very much Panda, i’ll find out.

WooHoo Panda!  Thank you SO much! Not only have you found the the ‘right’ answer but you have proved I haven’t lost my marbles.
Can I ask where you saw the original document?  I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
I was hoping it was a mistake in the transcribing, but it seemed so unlikely. Young doesn’t look anything like Barnes.  To be honest I can’t find either version on Ancestry or The Genealogist.  Although, I obviously did in the past.
