Is it written again down the page or on the next page similar?

Thank you,

I don't suppose anyone could please tell me what this address says. I know the top bit says Ashford Hill, but what about the underneath bit? Thank you.

Six rooms .... that's a good size then for that era .... toilet would be an outbuilding,  likely so too the laundry,  not likely in that count... so perhaps 6 could be :kitchen/dining/living/bath,  parlour (only used for visitors) bedrooms, hallway...

JM

Directions for answering the question about number of rooms on the 1911 census:

"Write below the Number of Rooms in this Dwelling (House, Tenement, or Apartment). Count the kitchen as a room but do not count scullery, landing, lobby, closet, bathroom; nor warehouse, office, shop".

6 rooms is sizeable for 1911.  :)

Added: Now we need "Crazy" to return to let us know if we got it right - is George Loader the man who he says is living at Ash Hill Common.  :)

Yes I believe that should be the George Loader. Seems weird, a 6 room cottage. LOL

Travelling People / Coopers of Kingsclere
« on: Saturday 30 March 19 18:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I have recently gone back on my grandmother's side, and while researching a bit, a particular family linked to one of my great x something grandmothers has come up. The Coopers of Kingsclere. I found a website made by another woman, and she stated that they could possibly be of Romany origin. I will copy what she has said here.

"I haven't found a better alternative to Richard of Woodcot so haven't ruled out the possibility that the Coopers have Romany origins. The earliest baptisms (ca 1650) recorded in 'clere co-incided with the period Romany families were moving into the south of England and there is a long tradition of Hampshire Coopers especially in the New Forest area. Kingsclere Dell has traditionally been associated with gypsies so it would not be unusual to find a Romany Cooper family settling there. Was Richard born and baptised (possibly several times) elsewhere?"

This is the information I have for Richard:
Born 1758, Woodcott, Hampshire
Died December 1827, Kingsclere, Hampshire
Married Judith Buxey on 14 May 1786.
Judith was born 1759 and died 1835.

If anyone could give me a bit of assistance with this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

As Ruskie suggested I have tried to balance both halves of the photo so there isn't as much contrast now.
Pat

Thank you - the strange part is, in a photo of her husband from the same era, he looks like a white person would. It’s veru strange.

Postal addresses are not necessarily very detailed. It varies, but might depend on the location, dates and the population. Many addresses on censuses are simply, for example, "High Street" and then the town name. Depending on the town or village there can be pages of people with the same address of "High Street".  :)

There have been numerous threads about odd addresses. One of mine lived "above the barn" in one census.

Also keep in mind that the census address is one night in ten years, so probably not wise to jump to any conclusions about addresses.

No censuses specifically show "type of accomodation" though with some it is included in their address. The 1911 census asks for "number of rooms" in the dwelling. That is on the bottom of the page. You could have a look at this number to get an indication of the size of the house and wealth of the family.

Well, Ash Hill Common, 0 rooms LOL.

To me it looks like Indian - if you are referring to the child in the photo.
Yes that's what I was thinking - the child is the older woman's grandchild. I do believe the family to be Romany.
