Book prize giving for attendance was usually made on anniversary day and you can see the pile of books on the desk. I have two 2nd prize books for 1937 and 1940 from a Primitive Methodist Chapel, Burton on Trent.

Hello Chrissiet,
Why not donate them to Staffordshire Records Office where they would be available for anyone to view. I am sure the Records Office would be pleased to receive them regarding them as valuable documents,

He's wearing collar and gauntlets as Worshipful Master of his Lodge. The blue colour is true.

When I was called up to register I was asked which service I would prefer. Having been in the sea cadets I opted for the Royal Navy and was told that it was a three year job so I declined. I suggested the Royal Military Police - that was a three year job so declined again. As father had served in the Royal Artillery during WWII I opted for that and was called up to the R.A. at Oswestry. After two weeks transferred to the R.M.P. for two years. So the answer is yes you did have an option.

World War Two / Re: Long Range Desert Group / LRDG / "Desert Rats"

Hi,
In 1958 there was a book published titled 'The Phantom Major' by Virginia Cowles. It gives an account of many of the exploits of the LRDG and S.A.S. with a list of names of those who took part. The name Smith is shown as taking part in one of the raids but no other detail. It is a good read and I believe that it is still available at Amazon but probably a used copy.

If you google 'wishful thinking staffordshire' you will get a list of churches and details of the headstones for each churchyard. I have checked myself but it doesn't list William Burton. However it is worth checking for your own satisfaction.
