I agree with Daisy. it helps if you could post the whole photo including the back. It looks like a postcard photo.

We, at the Carnegie Heritage Centre with be selling second hand and new books at this event. Also there will be a table of Ephemera with many interesting items. Please spread the word as we rely heavily on the revenue to boost funds for the running of the centre.
if you are unable to attend the event, then why not pop and have a look at the numerous files, Maps and local books that we have on Local History.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Hull - World War Two's Forgotten City
« on: Saturday 24 August 24 13:42 BST (UK)  »
This is a very detailed and interesting book about about the bombing of the City of Hull during the second World War. It was Co-Written by one of our volunteers at the Carnegie Heritage Centre on Anlaby Road, Hull. It is available at the Centre at a cost of £15 for this A4 size illustrated book.
It would make a great gift for Birthday or Christmas for those with an interest of the city during bombing raids of 1939-1945.

Two questions that might be relevant:
- what length of exposure might have been needed for a studio shot in the late 1870s?
- would a post-mortem photo be taken before or after rigor mortis had taken hold? (And how soon would that be?)

Rigor mortis is the stiffening of muscles after death. It is preceded by a total relaxation of the musculature immediately after death, known as primary muscular flaccidity. After rigor mortis, there is another wave of muscle relaxation called secondary flaccidity1234

I have hears of this before and here Arthur.
Good question.

The thing that I find odd about the photo is the child's hands: I would expect the fingers to be at least slightly curled and not so flat. The face is expressionless and the head is tilted back in a way that seems unnatural to me, but someone else has given possible reasons for that.
Good luck -- I hope you're able to learn more!

Hello and welcome to Rootschat James and thanks for sharing your interesting photo.

The above comments from Josephine sum up my thoughts on the image too.

The whole pose of the child looks unnatural and rather stiff and it is perched on the edge of what looks like a very small occasional with a single stand, a bit risky for a child to be able to sit still on. I did wonder whether the "Veil" could be a "Ghost Mother" holding the back of the child for stability.
Interesting photo and very thought provoking.

Some really lovely work on this. Here is my offering of your beautiful image, trying to be true to the original 100 year old photo.

I think it is a later image... was more inclined towards 1918-20s
She looks to be around 4/5 years old.
