Thanks again Andrew but I have absolutely no idea how to search these records...think I must be missing something!!  If your kind offer still stands my grandmothers name is Bridget Johnston died 18 December 1954. Many thanks in advance.

Jay

I have sent you a PM with the links to the images.

Following some help I received via this thread I accessed the non indexed images on line at FamilySearch.   Most records for St Kentigern's are available, but there are four films not yet uploaded online.    I have made a request via FS for these to be scanned and put online.  No guarantee it will happen tho I cannot see copyright or privacy being an issue as more recent records are already available on FS.   If they appear I will post on here.

Requested records :-
Daily interment books, 1882-July 1909, British Film 1574797
Daily interment books, July 1909-March 1926, British Film 1574798
Daily interment books, March 1926-September 1943, British Film, 1574799
Daily interment books, September 1943-July 1967, British Film, 1574805

Just an update.   The remaining films have now been digitised by FamilySearch and are online

The Family History section in the Mitchell Library has the burials for St Kentigern's.  Assuming you know a date of death you can visibly examine the records which are in date order and look through the days after the death.   That will give you the lair number and location.

Thank you so much for the information, very much appreciated!
Jay

You are very welcome.  Since I replied to your earlier post I found a lot of info for St Kentigerns on FamilySearch.   See my posts on p 16 of this thread.  If you have a date of death you should be able to find it on those records.  If you give me a name and date I can have a quick look .

Yes that's a good idea rather than throw away £30.  As it happens I also have an enquiry regards a WW2 record I am searching for, so can deal with both.   I was pondering after our exchange yesterday.... I know grandfather was in the HLI by the end of 1915 by virtue of it being shown on his daughters birth record.   Having found the Thomas McAbe record with the exact birth date in the 1921 Discharge Index but with a post 1920 Regimental number, are you aware of any reason why someone who served during the war, whether in action or not, would then have a post 1920 number ?    Were soldiers ever re registered ?

Sorry for all the ongoing questions.

Thank you very much for your help with this.  I had a look at the MOD requirements for a search.  I don't have a copy of his actual death certificate, tho I have the Statutory Record from Scotland's People.  So fingers crossed.

Thanks again, your help has directed me to a few useful sites that help me understanding war records etc.

Found the Silver War Badge index on Ancestry.  Not that easy to find !  Unfortunately, although it has the entry for Thomas McCabe 5791 HLI, it also shows his age as 23 which is too young for it to be the correct Thomas.   My Thomas would have been 28 in 1919.   Damn !

However, I have now found an entry in the UK, Military Discharge Indexes, 1920-1971 for a Thos McAbe which has a date of birth EXACT to the day as my Thomas.   It has a regimental number 3305013, but does not show the regiment.

Frustrating business

It is the record of his Silver War Badge noting his discharge under Para 392 (xvi) no longer physically fit for war service.

Of the three HLI battalions with 9 in the title, two of them 2/9th and 3/9th didn't service overseas which may explain the no medal card.

Thank you for that info.   When you say its a record of his silver war badge as distinct from a medal, is there a roll for that anywhere ?

Sorry missed the obvious bit of info  :o

His name is Thomas McCabe.   9th Bn HLI, Born 1891.
This is the index card I refer to.

Thanks

Sadly I started my family history research when it was too late, and most of the previous generation had passed.   I have tried many times to find any service records for my grandfather without success, so I assume his records were lost.   He served in 9th Bn HLI -  I know this from the birth certificates of his two daughters, both of which he registered and signed.   Knowing his date of marriage, and the birth and dates above I searched for a Medal Index card and by a process of illimitation have identified what I think is his service number as 5791 Enlisted 18/5/1915.

The medal index card I found on Ancestry shows enlistment in 1915 and discharge 1919 and with annotations in the right column, but nothing about medals.  I have also searched the Ancestry images of the medal roll for both the War medal and Star but cannot find him.

Would there be any reason for him not getting these medals ?
