If the marriage of Michael and Mary was in Pennsylvania I think we would really need to know where ?  I believe Pennsylvania marriages would be recorded at County level for that time frame. Sometimes we can only find these thru a search of newspapers, church records and obituaries.  Although it was a long shot I tried to go thru every Tierney member to see if an obituary might have mentioned where in Ireland the parents originated from but alas nothing was ever mentioned.

Sandra

Yeah it is rather frustrating since a decent amount of my family tree abruptly stops at like certain points due to lack of information / record keeping from the Ireland side of things. I decided to go the physical record method and submitted a death certificate request for Michael from Granville County and see if that sheds anymore light. Not holding out on any hope, but at least it'd be something if anything is revealed.

If your Joseph was born 1900 he wouldn't appear on the 1892 census   ???

Sandra

Oh thats actually a really good point. I did not even notice that at first.
Sorry, still a little sleepy this morning!  :)

1892 New York State Census, Moriah, Essex County - Tierney
Michael Tierney, age 39, born in Ireland, Labourer?
Mary, age 37, Ireland
Maggie, age 14, United States (as were the following children)
John, age 12
James, age 10
Mary, age 8
Wm, age 6
Tommie? (male), age 5
Patsey? (male), age 4
Katie, age 2
Martin, age 1

I think this is prob a different Tierney family. I got mixed up with them early on and had to backtrack. I know Michael was a part of the police force. Plus my ancestory Joseph doesnt appear to be listed

This isn't much help and perhaps some of it may have already been mentioned but:
Thomas L Tierney, according to his marriage document, WWI Draft Reg Card, and Social Security App and Claims Index was born in Mineville, New York.

In 1900, it was claimed that Mary Tierney was the mother of 10 children, 7 still living.  According to the New York Death Index, two girls/women died in 1893:
Kate, 21 March, Mineville
Maggie, 17 February, Mineville
Unfortunately, no ages were given.  Perhaps Tierney was a common name in that part of New York and these women were not related; or, perhaps they were Mary's daughters?

I don't know how I missed it earlier tonight (when I started looking around) but this looks like the family in 1880:
1880 Mineville, Essex County, New York Census
Michael Tierney, age 28, works in Mines, born Ireland
Mary, age 25, wife, Keeping House, born Ireland
Maggie, age 2, daughter, born Pennsylvania
John, age 4/12, (born March), son, born New York
   (Found on Familysearch website)

Update:  The pay site that I use shows the family as Tiernery in 1880.

Thank you for the insight, I appreciate it! I do know at least one of their children (James Tierney / NY Giants Secretary was born in Mineville, so i'll have to look and see if I can find the information you were referencing about the others (like John, didn't have him?).

If you want to buy any records, you could try getting Michael's death certificate.  It may list his parents' names, although the accuracy would depend on what the informant knew.  If possible, it would likely be faster to order it from Granville rather than the state, which is currently backed up 8+ months on genealogical requests.

Might there be any marriage records for NY? They say 33 years married in 1910.

New York state didn't require vital registration until around 1880, so it's a bit hit or miss before that.

Thank you for that tidbit. I've gone ahead and written a letter and will hopefully hear back from them in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed for any relevant details! :)

I actually noticed that they said Joseph was a secret service member? I wonder if this had to do with the WPA? Interesting  :o

Sadly Michael's birth before start of civil registration in Ireland, so not to be found on irishgenealogy.com, I looked on rootsireland.ie for the baptism of a Michael 1853 +_ 1 and there are 9.

Might there be any marriage records for NY? They say 33 years married in 1910.

No sadly I couldn't find anything on my end, just the marriage certificates for a few of their children with the parents names on it.

And that's a shame with the pre civil registration. Guess its all but impossible to find anything concrete given how tough those records are to find / identify.

In case you don't have it, the NY death index says Mary Tierney died age 66 on 13 Apr. 1941 in Granville.  Her obituary is here - http://www.fultonhistory.com/Newspaper%2019/Albany%20NY%20Knickerbocker%20News/Albany%20NY%20Knickerbocker%20News%201941/Albany%20NY%20Knickerbocker%20News%201941%20-%202365.pdf

There is a John Tierney who died in Granville on 28 May 1896.  Thought it might be worth noting, in case he's another relative.

That's her. And i'll take a look and see if there's any connections between Michael and John. Thank you!
