London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Completed: Brown, Robert of Hackney
« on: Saturday 07 April 07 12:30 BST (UK)  »
Desperately seeking the Browns of Hackney.
In the 1841 census Robert Brown is age 50 a Tin Plater of Bowling Green St, Hackney, the family are; wife Elizabeth age 45 and children Mary age 16, Eleanor age 15, Frederic age 14, Ann age 13 and Amelia age 5, whole family born in the county (Middlesex).
In the 1851 census Robert is age 61 a Zinc Plate worker of Hindel? St, West Hackney, the family are wife Elizabeth age 55 and Emily age 15 (presumably Amelia in the 1841) all 3 born in Hackney.

I am unable to find any of their birth records either in the IGI or the local churches.
St John Hackney (IGI seems to stop at 1812) so I have checked the baptisms from 1823 to 1828 for St John at the LMA and no children of Robert Brown listed.
Last week I checked St Mary Stoke Newington (IGI also seems to stop at 1812) and again no children of Robert Brown.
Surviving non conformist records seem to on the IGI.

Does anyone know of other churches in the vicinity of Hackney whose records for the 1820s are not on the IGI?

Many thanks
Derek

Hi Rick,
Thanks, yes Shirley in Australia has got the cert, this is what she sent me 'On marriage certificate of John Bail to Mary Bail (2nd wife) it has John's father as William Bail, farmer. The Marriage was witnessed by Hannah Bail and (what looks like) Alick Bail. (Could be Alice?? Bail) John was listed as 'widower' which is correct as his first wife died 21.11.1837'

Mary was also a Bail the daughter of Benjamin Bail (Bale) b ca 1790 d. 1838 and Ann Woodland (my direct ancestors are the Woodlands, through Ann's brother Robert).
I suspect that Benjamin may also have been born out of the county.
It is possible that William Bail (John's father) and Benjamin were related, possibly even brothers.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the Input, must visit Hertford one day.
I am related to John's wife Mary via her mother (sister of my GGGGmother), a very distant cousin.
An even more distant cousin in Australia is descended from John and Mary, don't know if she has had any research done on the parish registers. I will check with her.

Hi Rick,
Many thanks for trying your efforts are much appreciated.
I wonder where they were?
I suppose that the name may have been so horribly mangled that I'm just not seeing it.
I definitely have her in the 1841 and 1861 and him in the 1841. (He dead by 53).
I suppose they just may have been in a neighboring parish which is also missing from the Ancestry transcription, but that's just a guess. Ancestry just don't seem to have an accurate list of what they have not transcribed.
Again many thanks for looking.
Regards
Derek

Hi Rick,
That would be fantastic, even more so if you manage to find him.
Strongly suspect his birthplace in outside of Herts.

Herts Completed Lookup Requests / 1851 Lookup Request - BAIL

I am trying to find John Bail in the 1851 Census (Ancestry transcription) without success.
Have tried all variations I can think of and searched by children's birth place with no name and I can't find any of them.
I also had trouble finding him in the 1841 census (Ancestry Transcription) until I tried the transcription on British Origins and there he was living in Hastoe, Tring, Herts, it seems that the 1st 3 Tring districts are missing from Ancestry.
I am wondering if the same is true for 1851 and there are undocumented missing parts.

The Bail (Bale sometimes) family would in 1851 consist of:
John b. ca 1800 place unknown he died in 1854. Need to know where he was born.
Mary b. 1820 St Albans (John's second wife)

Children by fist wife may not all be at home
George b. 1830
Joseph b. 1832
Daniel b. 1835
John b. 1837

Children by second wife
William b. 1840 Tring
Ann b. 1844 Tring
Benjamin b. 1846 St Albans
Mary b. 1848 St Albans

In the 1861 census Mary and the younger children are living in Hemel Hempstead with her new husband Thomas Oliver.

If anyone can locate them in the 1851 I would be most grateful.
Thanks
Derek
