Northumberland / Re: The Kennedys of Northumberland

Mary  ,
I don't know much about my GtGrandmother Eliza. I was hoping to find out if she met William in Shropshire where he might have been working or training or met him in Newcastle /Gateshead.
He was the William who was born in 1858/9 and married Jane Anderson in Newcastle in 1887. Jane was born in 1864 in Newcastle and was a domestic. William was the son of William married to Sarah Forster and was born at Morpeth. He died in 1906 and was a market gardener.
William and Jane had six children not including Granddad and it was his daughter Sarah Jane born 1888 at Dunston that my father talked to. She died in 1973.

Yes, your Great Grandparents, William and Jane are the right ones, Market Gardeners at Dunston. Father went there to meet the family (I think I may have the address somewhere in his papers)
Now, what I believe happened is this (although Eliza was known to tell lies and embellish!!!) Eliza Hartshorn was born around 1870 in Shrewsbury. In 1887 she went to the Workhouse at Atcham to give birth to my Grandfather, John Wiliam Hartshorn. She then went to Newcastle to find William Kennedy who was a market gardener, only to find that he had got another girlfriend and, in fact, had just married her. In 1898, John William was placed in the Industrial School, Newcastle and Eliza moved around before moving to Leicestershire. Granddad was given a training in printing and went on to become a printer which was his trade. He also moved, on leaving the Industrial School, down to Leicestershire where he met my Grandmother, Margaret Wood. They had one child, my father Stanley. There was no knowledge of or contact between them and the Kennedys until we started to research our family name. It was only on what Sarah Jane told father AND the remarkable likeness to my Granddad which convinced my father that the Kennedys were indeed our "family". And that is really all I know. If you had any rumours or anecdotes concerning William and Eliza's "goings on" I would love to hear them. Or a photo?
Regards,
David

Hello,
William Kennedy was my Grandfather's father. I am also a twin! My father met him in Newcastle (or it might have been Gateshead) He was struck immediately by the similarity to his own father. He did not want to talk about what had been a sensitive time for him and the illegitimate birth of son. However, Sarah was very happy to talk to , and correspond, with my father. We took the family name of Grandad's mother. Grandad was christened John WILLIAM and later added Kennedy to a document when he was asked for his full name, although he never used it in real life.
My main aim has been to try and find out about my Grandmother, about whom we know very little, particularly where she came from. I would have liked to know whether William met her in Shropshire or whether she was in Newcastle when she met him.
Best wishes,
David

Dear Muriel,
Thank you for your information. I am not sure where they fit in without some dates but I can give you some recent (!) ones to see if you recognise any:
William Kennedy (b Morpeth1858-1906) married Jane Anderson (b 1864 N'castle) in 1887. He was a market gardener in Gateshead. They had Sarah Jane (b1889Dunston d1973), Dossie (1891Dunston), Flossie(1895 Dunston), George (1896 Dunston), Harry (1899 Haydon) and William (1899 Haydon) twins.
Do you recognise any of these?
Regards,
David

Europe / Re: Marriage and/or death in Italy

You are brilliant. I had come across Primo and wondered if there might be a connection but my Italian is almost non-existent.
I have been looking at the archives in Argentina for:
1. the birth of Luis Sebastiano Maggiora on 11th January 1915. This has involved looking at each individual baptism in each church in Buenos Aires - an extremely slow process made more difficult by my total lack of Spanish.
2. I intend to do the same with marriages to see if Rosa and Felino actually married.
3. I would like to pin down when they came to Argentina, by date and ship and from which port but I cannot find out where to start.
4. I know Luis (and family) moved back to Italy when he was 14 years old (1929) to complete his education. I would like to find evidence of that too.
Thank you so much for all your help so far. When you get to my age, the language is not just the problem. Your eyesight is poorer and you work much more slowly, although I like to think more thoroughly.

You are good, and for that I am grateful.
I will look at these references especially the Maggiora/Quaglino marriage.
Interestingly, his name was Giuseppe FELINO Maggiora for which I have only ever found one reference. He was born in 1879 at Refrancore.
By the way, do you know what the 'D' is in Marital Status? Could it be divorced or deceased?
Thank you once more,
David

I have found Giuseppe's arrival in Buenos Aires but cannot find his wife Rosa. I am unable to understand what the letters 'S', 'C' AND 'D' mean under Marital Status?
In 1929, Giuseppe and I presume his wife and son, Luis who would be about 14 years old, moved back to Italy. Can you show me how to find this information please?
Thanks again.

Thank you for your help. I haven't actually looked in detail yet. However, they are the parents of LUIS SEBASTIANO MAGGIORA.

Hello,
Can anyone tell me if it possible to research family history in Italy? Giuseppe Felino MAGGIORA was born in Refrancore, Asti, Italy in the 1800s. At some point he married Rosa QUAGLINO also from that area. I cannot find such information. Later they emigrated to Argentina but I cannot find that information either. Later they returned to Italy, Refrancore, where they eventually died and I am unable to find that information too.
Is there anyone who is able to point me in the right direction to search for these facts, please?
Thank you,
David
