Northumberland Lookup Requests / Tyne and Wear Archives Service: HARTSHORN
« on: Monday 15 May 06 15:54 BST (UK)  »
My Grandfather, JOHN WILLIAM HARTSHORN, was born to his unmarried mother in Shrewsbury in 1887. He next turned up in the Newcastle Industrial School aged 14 and she in Leicestershire. By 1906 he had also moved down to Leicestershire. I have no information about his stay in Newcastle, when he arrived, who placed him there and if he had any visitors while there or what he trained in. In fact, I have no information at all.
I understand that records of the school for this period are in TYNE AND WEAR ARCHIVES SERVICE, BLANDFORD HOUSE, BLANDFORD SQUARE, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE. NE1 4JA
I would be most grateful to anyone who could find the time to visit and look up this information for me. Thank you,
David

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Rooney
« on: Sunday 26 March 06 18:04 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the date of death of Richie Rooney in Bootle in about 1995. He may have been a catholic and I cannot find him in the usual Births, Deaths and marriages lists. I really want to contact someone who knows their way around the local Parish registers. Thanks,
David

Thank you Pete. I shall go through these carefully - and also slowly as I am new to this.

Having looked again at my fathers notes I realise that Grandad did not actually say he had been at Newcastle. It seems that father thought it must be the connection as Grandad's 'father' lived in Newcastle. Also, I think he is the only "John William" of the right age at that time in the Census.

Thank you again - you are certainly wonderful. (I find that I am unable to add a 'smiley' possibly because my computer is a Mac. It would be smiling if I could)
John William Hartshorn. Born 27th February 1887 at Union Workhouse, Berrington R.S.D. to Eliza Hartshorn, laundress of St Mary's, Shrewsbury. Her residence was also given as the Union Workhouse, Berrington. The birth was registered on 7th March 1887. The registration District was Atcham, sub-district of Condover and it was number 161.
We believe that Eliza died on 27th January 1911 in Leicestershire and Rutland Asylum, Narborough R.D. (What a family!!!) aged 43. She was described as the wife of Joseph Hill a general labourer of Coleorton, Leicestershire. This was number 299.
John William was in the Newcastle upon Tyne Industrial School for Boys and Girls, Jubilee Road, N on T in the 1901 Census. He appears as an inmate aged 14 who oddly gives his birth place as Chatham, Kent. We believe that this would be done to cover up his real birthplace though why Chatham, Kent I cannot guess. In fact, looking in Kent there were no Hartshorns to speak of! The records are in the Census, Northumberland - All Saints - District Industrial Schools.

Thank you Jan. As you have no doubt guessed by now, I am an 'oldy' who doesn't know where to turn! The trouble with Eliza is that we don't know of her birth (so no cert.) and therefore, no parents to use to check. The other problem is that every Hartshorn in Shropshire seemed to call their daughters Eliza in those days. We are not sure of her age although the family seemed to think she was about 43 when she died which would make her date of birth around 1865. What to do next.......
By the way, what are the little faces at the top of the box? Should I do something with them?

Thank you. I should have added that I looked in the 1891 Census and neither he or his mother appear! That I think is probably the real problem - they have slipped "beneath the radar". So.... I think I need to look at more local lists and correspondence such as parish registers etc.,
Best wishes,
David

Hello.
I am trying to find information on my late Grandfather, John William HARTSHORN. He was born in Berrington Union Workhouse in 1887 to his unmarried mother, Eliza Hartshorn. I believe they parted soon afterwards and he was later found to be in the Industrial School in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1901. Where was he in between? I would be grateful for any help or advice.
