World War One / British charabanc outside Belgian Consulate
« on: Tuesday 26 September 23 12:51 BST (UK)  »
This photo shows a charabanc owned by my gt.grandfather who is standing to the right.
It is parked outside the Belgian consulate, possibly in Boulogne.
Gt.grandfather was a continental carrier and wine importer who travelled a lot in France.

I'm trying to figure out who the passengers might be but haven't been able to identify any uniforms as yet. The civilians look to me like local dignitaries/politicians.
Does anyone recognise the uniforms or have any idea what the event might be?

World War One / New canal through the Somme
« on: Tuesday 02 May 23 16:05 BST (UK)  »
Apologies if this has been mentioned before.
A new canal, the Seine Nord Europe is to be built, its route going up through Peronne and the Eastern Somme.
The CWGC have been researching the battlefields which will be excavated and are anticipating that the remains of over 700 Allied soldiers will be found. Research will be undertaken to make any identification if possible and the CWGC cemetery at Loos is to be extended for reburials.
A great uncle of mine was killed near Peronne and is one of many with no known grave who are remembered at the Arras memorial.

Neale and John,
Thank you both so much for all your efforts. My great uncle first went to Victoria BC in 1911,then returned to sign up for the British army in WW1, but returned to Victoria immediately afterwards. I didn't know that Annie Maud had been a nurse, perhaps that is how they met. I never really knew them although they  came back to the UK frequently until retiring here in 1950's. Your info has put flesh on the bones of what I knew.

Ayrshire / Lost Struthers Ayr

1901 census has Alexander William Struthers b Glasgow 1852 solicitor, wife Jessie Jane née McCall b 1858 Tobago
and 4 children, aged from 20 down to a baby.
The eldest was Annie 20, who married my great uncle. The others were Gertrude18, Robert W 16,John A who attended his sister's wedding in Vancouver and George.
Having nothing better to do this afternoon I thought I would see what happened to the family.
Found nothing, not in 1911 census, no deaths of parents or marriages of siblings. Seems very odd?

Thanks, order finally accepted and wills pending. Think it may have had something to do with an adblocker I was using.

Can I just check if anyone has successfully downloaded a will recently? I now have 2 wills in my basket but on trying to pay get a message that the card number is incorrect or incompatible. Even got my husband to try with same result.

Armed Forces / Re: Anybody recognise this officer?

The uniform seems to be of a senior officer in the Indian Army, ie British army in India, probably 1860's.
I came across a painting of Field Marshal Sir Patrick Grant 1804-95, wearing a similar tunic, but he is not the subject.
I can see why you like it, his face especially is painted beautifully.

I tried a couple more times to get wills and probate to accept a credit or debit card without success.
Their latest suggestion is that I apply for a postal search using a cheque or postal order. The process then takes 8 weeks.
I hadn't realised that postal orders even existed anymore!
Looks as if it might be the only option.

I have left a couple of negative reviews on their site after having the same problems as you.

I received a reply that "Our website is fully functioning"
Best laugh of the day!
