Hi,

Just to add to the confusion, in 1919 he was Herbert Edward Richard Northway Walters. Belper News 6 June 1919

I can’t upload the article right now for some reason.  Briefly it states that Charles Henry Herbert Law, a steelworker from Barnsley, using the name of “Clifford Herbert Henry Law” bigamously married Alice Louisa Northway Waters of 59 Oxford street, Barnsley on 11th February 1919 at Clowne Parish Church.  Mr. Law was the father of Alice’s child, born 11th May.  Herbert Edward Richard Northway Walters, general dealer of 254 Creswell Road, Clowne, deposed to being present at the marriage in Clowne.

Defendant said he had been in the Army 4 ½ years and complained that his home and children were neglected.  He was continually being reproached for carrying on with other women while he was in the Army, which made him indifferent as to what he did.  Defendant was committed for trial.

Mr Law’s legal wife was named Ada.

added:
Excuse for Bigamy with Sheffield Girl
“My wife drove me to it,” pleaded Herbert Law, steel worker of Stanton, admitting bigamy at Derby assises today.

Mr Cracroft, prosecuting, said within eight days of prisoner ordering his wife from home he married a Sheffield girl, Alice Louisa Northway Walters.  Prisoner represented he was single at the time.  Prisoner said his first marriage was unhappy.  He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.
Sheffield Evening Telegraph 1 July 1919

That is really interesting.  I didn't know about the bigamy charge, I knew he was previously married to Ada Parkes.

He is the first one I know to be charged, there are lots in my tree who claim to be Widowed before marrying someone else, and they aren't.

Is there a site that tracks divorces for the 1850-1920's?   I would love to be able to go back and check.

The Herbert is new,  At some point when I can get to the church at clowne I'm going to go through their burial book to see if he's there.

You are researching the origins of this woman?

".. I have their daughter named Alice Louisa Northway Walters, on the Marriage Register, in 1819 the father is Edward Richard Northway Walters."

Who did Alice Louisa Northway WALTERS marry...when and where?

No I'm researching Edward Richard Northway Walters.

He was just just Richard Northway when he married,  then Edward Walters on the Census.   I've pretty much decided he just added the Edward Walters to his name, I just don't know why.

Have you considered buying a copy of the 1892 marriage cert?   It may give some additional info but no guarantees

possibly, I'll wait and see if anymore of my family research comes up for Bourne and then I'll make a trip to their archives to see if I can access them, it's cheaper in the long run.

This is the strangest person I've come across, I thought for a long time there were 2 marriages, but then noticed the length on the 1911 certificate.

It's the missus's family as well, so I've only just started researching properly.

Rose Ellen Northway mmn Barwell 1892 Bourn

Alice Louisa Northway mmn Barwell 1900 Worksop plus Ada Elizabeth Northway 1901 died 1904

William Charles Northway 1902 mmn Barwell

Thanks,  I guess they were not baptised then, I'm so used to being able to go to that.

GRO online has no Walters birth with a mmn Barwell 1892 - 1904

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Alice Louisa Northway Walters, who I mentioned for the marriage, was married in Clowne 1919, she is mentioned as being born in Clowne aged 10 for the 1911 census, but I couldn't find her in the baptism book for Clowne in 1900 or 1901.

No birthplaces shown in your post?  Edward was b 1866 London & Lizzie 1874 Rutland.

What about dtr Ellen b 1893 - what surname was she registered under?

Ellen is Walters I believe, a year after the marriage to Northway, I can't find a baptism record for her. I'm beginning to think Richard Northway just added the extra names to himself.

Bourne is Lincolnshire but you have posted on the Derbyshire board.  What is the connection?

Are they on the 1901?

No birthplaces shown in your post?  When was Edward born?

Apologies, I posted the original before I went out,  I was obviously reading it with the information I have

in 1901 they are in Stanfree, Bolsover, then move to Clowne after.  From then on they are only in Clowne.

Edward is down as Wokingham on the 1901 Census, and then London in 1911.

Lizzie is in Castle Bytham for 1891 so Bourne would be there.  I can't find a Richard Northway or Edward Walters in that area for 1891.

I put it in Derbyshire because that's where they ended up.  I guess it could have been in the Berkshire, Lincolnshire or Rutland sections.

Hi,

I'd like to thank all who helped with my last request, I do have a new one.   I'm struggling with the Husband of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Barwell 1876-1961.

I have 2 names for her husband and wondered how easy it would have been to just change names?

I have a marriage record in the marriage index for Bourne 1892 with Richard Northway.

I have the 1911 Census which says she's been married to Edward Walters for 19 years. so the same year.

I have their daughter named Alice Louisa Northway Walters, on the Marriage Register, in 1819 the father is Edward Richard Northway Walters.

Would it have been easy to just add names?   I have no baptism record for Alice L N Walters.

I can also not find a burial record for Edward Richard Northway Walters.

Lizzie Barlow (Walters) spent all the life according to the census records in Clowne.

Any help would be appreciated even the he just added bits to his name sort.

 David
