Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / William KINGSHOTT baptised about 1820 in Greatham
« on: Thursday 31 October 19 00:20 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone please confirm the year of William's baptism?

The transcript says he was baptised on 26 Mar 1820 as William son of John and Mary KINSHOT, in Greatham, Hampshire.

This was a full 9 months before they married, so he would have been more likely baptised with his mother's surname, SMALL.

Sometimes the original recordist has absentmindedly written the previous year's date at the top of the page, which would make the transcript technically correct, but illogical.

If his baptism year was 1821, then his mother was 6 months pregnant when she married, which makes more sense.

Can someone please clarify this?

Thanks :)

The Common Room / Vitebergensis
« on: Friday 13 September 19 17:11 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone happen to know what Vitebergensis means?

I'm guessing it's Latin, but cannot find any kind of dictionary or reference that will hazard a definition.

The book's full title is "Album Academiæ Vitebergensis".

It seems to be a book of births and baptisms. Would any other kinds of record be included?

Here's where I found it:

US Lookup Requests / Illinois records
« on: Thursday 12 September 19 06:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Does anyone know why the site ilsos.gov would be displaying the message "You are attempting to access a forbidden site"?

I live in Australia. My ISP has said they aren't the ones blocking it, and I can't see why the Australian government would.

Is it still a current site? or is it now used for some other purpose that some authorities object to?

Specifically I wanted the page ilsos.gov/isavital/deathsrch.jsp (or marriagesearch, etc.).

If this is still an active site with genealogical records, I am hoping someone will look it for me and send screenshots.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / curate "something" was buried
« on: Monday 22 July 19 14:02 BST (UK)  »
I have a piece of Latin I can't decipher.

I can see that the first word is 'curate', and the last words mean "was buried", but what is the bit in the middle? It looks sort of like 'luisus ettlefree' (pardon my ignorance).

Is it a place name perhaps? The fellow died in Staffordshire, in Stoke on Trent. Although I can't see any place names that in any way resemble that word.

Can anyone help?

Thanks :)

Does anyone happen to know where I can find info on when this school was established?

I know Archbishop Thomas Tenison founded other schools as well, but it is this one in particular I would like to know about.

One of my forebears was made master of the school, with the context suggesting that he might have been the first master.

I'd like to know when the school was founded so I can see how it slots into his timeline.

Thanks :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / occupation 'busb ??
« on: Thursday 28 March 19 08:51 GMT (UK)  »
I read the first marriage as saying "Francis FLEXMUR 'busb. of South Mimms in Middlesex Br (bachelor) & Sarah WENHAM Spr (spinster)"

The first and last marriages seem to say that the husband's occupation is " 'busb".

There seems to be an apostrophe in front of the second description so I'm guessing that this word either ends in "busb", or has that in the middle.

What do you think?

What occupation is meant?

Thanks
