Technical Help / Re: ipad problem
« on: Saturday 25 November 17 23:33 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to both Ruskie and CaroleW for replies.

I have a 4 year old Apple. -----I had a look at the settings as suggested but am nervous at pressing anything in case I lose everything! . I am what you might call "technically challenged!!!"  ;D

However, I shall be brave and press 'reset network settings'. If you don't hear from me again you'll know something went wrong   ;)

Technical Help / ipad problem
« on: Saturday 25 November 17 22:17 GMT (UK)  »
Recently my ipad keeps 'losing' the site i am looking at with-----The web page is not available' and underneath in blue ----Try again.

It has been doing this on various websites recently quite a lot, i was reading about 'strictly' just now and it did it yet again.

I start reading and scrolling down the page and then - whoosh - the blooming page vanishes  ???

My ipad has always behaved itself until the last couple of weeks but it is happening so often now that it is becoming beyond just annoying  >:(

Any clues from anyone?  :)

The Common Room / Re: Twins on different dates?
« on: Saturday 23 September 17 23:51 BST (UK)  »
My apologies----have only just realised i hadn't replied with a  'Thank you' for your responses.
Cannot find a definitive answer to their ages.

George's marriage cert didn't show an age and Ancestry trees all go with  1812.
1861 census for George shows him b 1814. His birth date on his death info is shown as 1811.

I'm still scratching around for Everdon. One census has her down as a Male !
Until i can spend more time with them i will just put good old 'circa' down on my tree.  ;D

Technical Help / How to upload a home movie dvd to laptop.
« on: Tuesday 08 August 17 17:47 BST (UK)  »
I have several mini discs from a Handycam that i would like to copy for a family member.

Have managed to do this a couple of times in the past but my aging brain has forgotten HOW  ::)

I have done the usual 'Google' but find the people on Rootschat easier to understand.

I know you have to upload them first onto the p.c and then download onto an empty disc but my brain has gone awol !!

Pretty sure that before my p.c was reconfigured after it crashed that it held a programme that enabled me to do this.

Anyone ?????  poli

Technical Help / Re: Opening docx files
« on: Tuesday 01 August 17 23:26 BST (UK)  »
Someone has kindly tried to 'open' one of the docx files for me and found it was corrupted. Knowing that, i am fairly sure that the rest of the docx files are quite probably similarly affected.

Am now taking more measures to back up more of what i have that is important to me.
I already have info on an external hardrive  and will keep adding to it.

Thanks to all once again for trying to help. poli :)

Thanks to all for trying to help.

Ray-----when i right click on the file i am not given a choice of Microsoft.
By "disappeared" do you mean it's lurking somewhere on my p.c?

Japeflakes------i tried to download your suggestion but although it said 'downloaded' i can't see it !!

Mart 'n' al------ i do worry about downloading programmes i don't know about. I took a deep breath and tried Japeflakes suggestion and failed.

jaybeinz----I can't find Open office in my list of programmes.

I appreciate you all trying to help but i'm floundering :-[ :-[ :-[   poli

Thank you both for replying.

A couple of months ago my laptop broke down. I found someone local who got the p.c working again
but lost many photos and files.

I recently found in 'My documents' a file that said 'Recovered files' so was hoping  it contained some of those i had lost, however when i opened it there was just a list of about 12 Docx files.

Unfortunately they don't make sense when opened which is why i was hoping to convert them into
something readable.  poli

p.s i have Windows 7

something readable.  poli
