Knowing how you can all work miracles here, can anyone identify the school & all the children?  ONLY JOKING!

Would appreciate a bit of a tidy up please.  My Grandfather, born 1882, is second from right back row.  Would you say these were five year olds starting school?  if so about 1887 then?

They were living in Bloomsbury then, so I guess that is where the school was, but then why did they use a photographer from Hammersmith?

Thanks
Robert

One of my father's sellotape jobs.  The back is not visible, previously glued into another album and the surface of that card remained firmly attached to the back of the photo when it was removed by him and put in the current album.

It looks very like my Aunt Rose, born in 1902.  But do the clothes, style, backdrop etc (and the aspidistra!) agree with that ID?

Thanks.  Robert

Kent / Stuppells from Chislet
« on: Wednesday 18 February 09 15:40 GMT (UK)  »
I have the following Stuppell family -

Sarah     born 8 Jul 1811,  chr 28 Jul 1811
Stephen born 12 Dec 1812,  chr 3 Jan 1813
Ann(e)    born 2 April 1815,  chr 23 April 1815
Ellen       born 31 Jan 1817,
John       born 11 July 1819, chr 11 July 1819
Harriett  born 26 Jan 1822
Henry     born 26 Jan 1822
Ester      born 20 Apr 1824,  chr 9 May 1824
Phebe/   born 18 Feb 1827,  chr 25 Mar 1827
Phoebe

They were the children of Stephen & Sarah Stuppell.  This was Stephen Stuppell and Sarah Brenchley (born 1790, Ash near Sandwich) married Chislet 28 Jun 1811.  I could do with help tracing Stephen, it has been suggested that he is a Stephen Stuppell born c1758 in Chislet, but I have some doubts about this.  Spelling of Stuppell varies considerably!

Thanks

Could someone give a bit of a clean-up to Nan (born 1882) and her sisters, Harriet Ellen (born 1884) and Martha (born 1887) please.  I would guess the date as mid-late 1890s, but does that fit with clothes etc.  It has a standard John Hart back, with addresses as on the front.

Thanks

Norfolk / Harriet Nockels born in Cromer?
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 01:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone find any information about the birth of a Harriet Nockels in Cromer c1830, possibly the illegitimate daughter of another Harriet Nockels?

The first actual appearance of her is on 29 May 1852, living at 34 Lower Russell Street, Bloomsbury, Middlesex, when she married Edwin Gulliver.  She gives her father as Henry Nockels, fisherman.  In 1861 they are living at 10 Duke Street, Bloomsbury, her age is given as  30 and her birthplace as Cromer.  She died  21 September 1868, at 22 Bloomsbury Street, Bloomsbury, age given as 38, cause of death typhus fever and asthma.

I have not been able to find any trace of her prior to the day of her marriage, the identity of her mother was suggested by another pearson researching the Nockels family in Cromer.  Name spelling is highly variable!

Thanks

Robert

Another of my father's photos, complete with sellotape, this is a plain photo that appears never to have been mounted on a card.  Eliza Lamborn, born 1848, again, this time with husband Henry Flood, born 1847, and assorted family members.  Others think that the pale blur front right is a small child who couldn't keep still, I wonder if it is one of those bizarre Victorian things where a photo of a baby who subsequently died has been added to a later photograph "to complete the family group".  What do people think?

Suffolk / John BOWYER, a problem.
« on: Monday 09 February 09 20:04 GMT (UK)  »
John Bowyer was born about 1789, possibly in Kedington, Suffolk, but it seems difficult to fit him into the known Bowyer family there.

In 1808 John marries a Hannah Missen in Carlton, Cambs.  Between 1810 and 1821 they have 5 children born in Brinkley, Cambs and in 1825 another child born in West Wratting, Cambs where they are still living in 1841.  John's age is given as 55.  In 1851 John & his wife and a grandson are living in Stetchworth, Cambs.  Here his age is given as 62 and his birthplace as Ketton, Suffolk.  Ketton is the local pronunciation of Keddington.  His occupation is given as blacksmith.

The obvious family would be that of Edmund (aka Edward) Bowyer of Kedington, who are also blacksmiths, but he doesn't fit.  Edmund married a Hannah Walliker in Kedington, Their children were John, born 1774, died 1781, William died Weston Colville 1797 and Edmund (also called Edward)  born 1785.  Hannah died 1786 and Edmund/Edward moved to Weston Colville, Cambs, where he married Mary Brown(e) in 1789.  Edmund & Mary had 6 children in Weston Colville, Mary born 1789, Anne born 1790 died 1791, Anne born 1791 died 1791, Anne born 1793 died 1794, Sarah born 1795 and Henry born 1798.  Mary died 1799 and Edmund in 1814. The Cambridgeshire information I have checked but can't check the Suffolk. Incidentally, the youngest son, Henry, was a blacksmith in Stetchworth in 1851 like John.

John doesn't seem to fit in the Keddington family so where did he come from & when?  Any ideas gratefully received.

Unlike my mother's collection, my father's photographs are a mess.  Most hacked out of their mounts, the card split to make them thinner (so backs lost), stuck into an album with an industrial grade adhesive, or sellotape or both! And no indication whatsoever as to who, where, what, when.

This one has fared better than most, at least we have the back.  Family consensus is that it is probably Eliza Lamborn, born 1848, but does this agree with the age of the lady and date of photo?  Best alternative would be someone born 1823.

Thanks

This  rather uncomfortable looking young man is the last of my mother's unknown photos.  The new suit doesn't look as though it fits that well.

What next?  Do I put up some of my mother's identified photos for a bit of a cleanup, or do I let you see  the nightmares than are my fathers family photos?

Thanks

Robert
