« on: Tuesday 05 January 21 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Is anyone here able to work out the surname of the woman in the third marriage listed in this extract?

John Harte and Jeane Dillingcombe maybe?

Many Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Writing from 1525
« on: Sunday 13 December 20 01:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I'm just wondering if anyone is able to read this old style of writing? This extract comes from the beginning of a record in  the Court of the Exchequer relating to my ancestor Nicholas Tufton of Northiam and is dated 1525.

Can anyone shed any light on what this says or the style of writing? Alternatively can anyone suggest a way to decipher it.

Many Thanks
Matt

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Christening of Mary Palmer - Medbourne area
« on: Thursday 24 September 20 15:51 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a christening for Mary Palmer probably in the Medbourne area possibly sometime between the 1700s and early to mid 1720s.

Mary married William Ashby at Medbourne in October 1743. He was christened in Medbourne in 1717 so it is possible Mary was christened sometime between 1710 and the late 1720s.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

The Common Room / The Genealogist Website
« on: Thursday 10 September 20 00:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Hope someone might be able to advise me here. Is there anyone who uses The Genealogist website a lot? I am trying to locate some wills and PR entries on there but when I search nothing comes up.

One will is for Robert Dixon of Selling, Kent and took place in 1680.

Another is a will for Amye Cleeveland of Wye dated 1628 [probate 1629]

I have the details for both of these and other Kent wills from the Canterbury Cathedral Probate Website however whenever I look for any will or surname in Kent nothing seems to come up. Have they ignored Kent?

The same applies to Sussex, so far despite knowing the exact probate dates and having the references from county record offices I can't see any Sussex or Surrey wills on the website.

The website claims to have loads of resources but no matter what I look for [even a baptism in the 19th century] I come up against a brick wall.

Am I doing this wrong?

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks

Sussex Lookup Requests / Mary Seymour c1713 Rudgwick area
« on: Friday 28 August 20 15:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Hope someone can help here. Can anyone double check for a christening in the Rudgwick area for a Mary Seymour c1713?

Mary married James Compton at St Marie's Guildford in 1739. They married by licence and were both described as being "of Ridgwick" [that is how Rudgwick appears in the transcription I have seen]. James was a bachelor and Mary was a spinster and both were 26.

I have found James Compton's christening which took place in Rudgwick in 1713 but so far I've not had any luck with Mary. Is there any sign of a possible candidate in any nearby parishes?

The marriage licence also mentions a "Thomas Stynt of "Careford", co Sussex, farmer" who may be a relative but I don't know where "Careford" is. Could it be a mispelling of Kirdford?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Woodgate Will Margin Note
« on: Wednesday 26 August 20 02:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm hoping someone can help me with a note found in the margins of the 1646 will of William Woodgate of Withyham, Sussex.

This note is from page two of the will. I can make out the name Woodgate in this but not all the rest.

Is it a correction to the will?

There is also a second longer note in right hand margin near the end of the will near to the probate section. This looks like it may be in Latin. I'll post that separately as it's too big to add to this post.

This will was proved in the PCC in case that helps.

Many Thanks

Sussex Lookup Requests / Elizabeth Read/Reed
« on: Saturday 22 August 20 18:35 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate a christening for a woman named Elizabeth Read who I believe married my ancestor James Holden at Lewes St Michael in 1803.

I've found these two potential candidates:

Elizabeth Read christened 15 June 1788 at Lewes - parents James and Mary

Elizabeth Reed christened 18 April 1784 at Brighton - parents William and Abigail

Given that Lewes and Brighton are so close either could be the person I'm looking for.

So far I've not been able to locate a burial for either in order to eliminate one.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can sort this mystery out and establish which Elizabeth I should follow up?

Kent Lookup Requests / Richard Wise
« on: Friday 21 August 20 23:08 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone here able to double check for a christening for a Richard Wise [or Wyse] in the Throwley area probably in the 1580s or early 1600s?

Richard married Sarah Thomas at Throwley in 1624 and by her he had a son named Thomas [1627/28] and a daughter named Sarah [1630/31].

Sarah snr [wife of Richard] appears to have died in April 1632 and then Richard married again to a woman named Mary Cheese [or Mary Cooke] at Selling on 16 July 1632. By Mary he had a son named Obidier [1633] and a daughter named Mary [1634] who like Thomas and Sarah before were christened in Throwley.

So far the only record I have found for a christening is for a Richard Wise who was christened in Acrise in 1578 son of Clement.

Could this be the same man? Acrise is 14 miles from Throwley.

Thoughts and suggestions welcomed.

Thanks

Matt
