The Common Room / Fraser johnston
« on: Thursday 28 December 23 15:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone.
I'm looking for some information about Fraser Johnston. Born 8 June 1886 Edinburgh.
Died 1945 southwark surrey. He joined the navy 1917.
He married may Bessie Jacobs 1913 southwark.  Other than a possible death for her in Cheltenham 1976 , (not sure it's her)I cant find anything about her at all. No children nothing.
On the 21 census Fraser is living in rooms at his father in laws house at 188 new Kent road southwark but no wife .
He states he is married.
Now the mystery is this :
In 1922 he fathers a child ,Mary johnston, and her mother is annie Francis, southwark, and is followed by Jack b Johnston 1925,southwark.
They are all living together at 152 John ruskin street, southwark on the 1939 census and stating that they, annie and Fraser, are married ,but I cant find an entry for this.
Annie was the informant in 1941 on her fathers death certificate and was using the surname Johnston .
I just cant find a marriage for annie and Fraser or what happened to may Bessie Jacobs ( johnston)
Fraser was definitely married to her on the 1921 census but fathers anothers child 1922.
Did he and may Bessie have children even ,and where did she go?
Any help would be so gratefully received.  Thank you x

« on: Friday 22 December 23 10:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone.
I'm hoping you wonderful people can help me .
My great aunt was jennie Francis born 1895 southwark London.
She died in netherne mental institution November 8 1941 after being committed twice to there. Second time was about 1932.
Her father was alfred Francis 1863 southwark London and mother annie marsh 1863. Annie was married before to George marsh.
I have my great aunts hospital records and I know all I need to about her but on her hospital records it states that her
Father alfred Francis was also in banstead mental  hospital and her siblings james and Louisa were in bexleyheath mental hospital .
Louise was born 1902 and James 1905 southwark.
There are other siblings but they seemed to be ok .
What I cant find are definite deaths for alfred ,James and Louisa, louise ?
Also the death of annie Francis 🤷‍♀️
I've had a good look on various sites but nothing is jumping out at me.
It was a rather tragic family.
Thank you x

The Common Room / Father of James harry elphick
« on: Saturday 12 August 23 16:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone.  I'm still on a mission to find the father of James harry elphick. James harry elphick was born in 1926 in Egypt. His father was in the army there.
James harry elphick married Mary Hughes on anglesey in 1946. I can find an indexed entry.
The early life of James harry wasn't great . He had an elder brother frederick and a younger sister who was also born in Egypt. Name unknown.
His mother died while giving birth to his sister . His father was in China at the time and didnt return to Egypt until 3 months after the death of his wife and the birth of his daughter. He knew nothing of both until his return. His new daughter was named by an army official as there was no one else to name her.
James harry elphick and his siblings were returned to the UK shortly afterwards to live with various relatives. James harry was with family in Portsmouth until he was 15 and joined the merchant navy.
My mission is to try and find the name of the father of James harry elphick.  I could of course would get a copy of the marriage certificate as it would have the fathers name on there but I'm searching for him with another person and for some reason does not want to do that.
The name of the sister is also unknown.  Even to the family. All they know is that she became a nurse and got run over by a tank. She survived, shaken but unharmed .
She would of been born late twenties, early thirties in Egypt.
I am in touch with the son of James harry elphick and knows very little as his father didnt like talking about his early life.
James harry elphick spent the remainder of his life in the anglelsey area of Wales.
His brother frederick lived in borehamwood at some point. And as for the younger sister. I have nothing for her other than her surname was elphick and was born in Egypt after 1926 and the thirties. And the fact that she became a nurse and got run over by a tank 🤦‍♀️
I would really appreciate any help .

Sussex Lookup Requests / Burial place for Edward elphick
« on: Sunday 16 July 23 18:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I'm looking for the burial place for Edward elphick b 1790 in barcombe, Sussex and died 1863 in the ditchling workhouse.  He was the father of James the highwayman.
Would the workhouse have it's own grave yard or would the inmates be buried elsewhere?
He is on the 1861 census as being an inmate there . Apparently on the census it says vessels . I've not seen the census and know idea what this means on a census for someone who's not on a boat 🤷‍♀️
Any help with this is gratefully appreciated.

The Common Room / Elizabeth jackson
« on: Sunday 21 March 21 09:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I have a conundrum regarding the birth of my grandmother Elizabeth Jackson.
She was born 26th July 1914. 46 wolseley buildings, bermondsey. Her mother was Elisabeth Sarah Jackson.
There is no father mentioned on her birth certificate but a S NORMAN registered the birth on the 2nd September 1914 and was also present at birth. This person was also living at 46 wolesley buildings.
I've looked into who this person could be but haven't found a link to the family.
The odd thing is and its completely thrown me but I've recently found a baptism record for my grandmother for the August 1914 which is inbetween her birth and registration but not only is her mother noted on the baptism record but so is a Thomas hall ?? and noted as also living at 46 wolesley buildings.  There is no other mention of Thomas hall after that . Also why did Elizabeth Sarah Jackson not register her own daughter ? Elizabeth Sarah Jackson went on to marry Alex sandford in 1818 and brought my grandmother up as his own. Funny thing is he is also noted as living at 46 wolesley building on this date. Baring in mind it was only a 2 room dwelling there's a lot of comings and goings.
Elizabeth Sarah Jackson's father John also lived at the same address for some years until his death in 1922.
Any help would be lovely and gratefully appreciated.

The Common Room / Missing Mary Ann godfrey
« on: Sunday 14 March 21 12:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.   I'm having trouble locating the sister of my grt grandmother . There were 3 siblings. My great grandmother, Elizabeth Jane Godfrey b abt 1873 islington..John Henry Godfrey and Mary Ann Godfrey. Both islington.. I dont know the dates of birth for John and Mary but would of been after 1872 and  they were all baptized on the same day ,Oct 1878. I think their mother , Mary ann died the following year . Their father was John henry Godfrey.
I can find Elisabeth, mary Ann and brother John Henry on the 1881 census living with their maternal grandmother Ann hawes . I think I have found John Henry   in the poor house with his father john Henry Godfrey although his date of birth is slightly out but there maybe a reason for lying about his age when admitted but cant be absolutely sure.
I cant find Mary Ann and my grt grandmother Elizabeth Jane Godfrey on the 1891 census but Elizabeth Jane married in 1895 to Gillingwater. I would love to know what happened to siblings Mary Ann and brother John Henry godfrey as the family story is that they had a rough childhood and would like to know what happened to them both. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.  Many thanks
