Notes on the Gerard Family from "Genealogies of An Aberdeen Family 1540-1913"
https://archive.org/details/genealogiesofabe00smit

I have pondered over who might be the parents of Alexander Gerard, a farmer, for many years and wondered if anyone has better insights.  Alexander is known to have married Janet Irvine.

I believe Alexander's parents are John Gerard, farmer Midmar and Crossley, and his first wife (unknown) and is a half-brother of Rev. John Gerard.

The Rev. John Gerard, b. 12th Sept., 1765;
m, Jane Craig (b. 1764; d. 30th Jan., 1837), sister of Peter Craig, M.D., of West Indies; d. 9th Oct., 1850. He was the son, by a second marriage, of John Gerard, Farmer, Midmar and Crossley, Fetteresso (d. Sept., 1791), and Jane Jamieson (d. 17th Aug., 1814). John Gerard's family by his first marriage consisted of:

1. Alexander, b. 1758; Jane Affleck (d. about Dec, 1833); d. 9th Sept., 1833, at Cotbank,
Glenbervie. He was a Farmer. Their family consisted of Janet and Jane.  Did he marry Janet Irvine after 1833 and before she died in 1840?  I have that in 1834 Alexander was a tenant farmer in Greenheads.
2. James, in. Sarah Blackhall (d. 17th Feb., 18 16)
:
d. March 1801. He was a Farmer, Tillyboy, Echt. Their family consisted of Margaret
(Mrs. Shewan, Skene, who had a daughter), James (d. May, 1801), and Isabel (6. April,
1 801).
3. Jane, d. 9th Sept., 1779, at Crossley, Fetteresso. By his second marriage, his family consisted of:

1. John, b. 12th Sept., 1765, of whom before and
hereafter.
2. George, d. Sept., 1832.
3. Isabella, b. 1770; m. before 1802, George
Tytler, Farmer, Milltown of Corsindae, of whom before (page 100).

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Argyllshire / Angus McLeod born about 1833 in Torosay
« on: Sunday 10 March 24 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out if anyone has further info on Angus McLeod christened 30 April 1831 in Torosay.  Parents  Norman MacLeod and Sarah (perhaps Marrion) MacKinnon.

I have him in the 1841 census from Freecen: Roderick 20, Mary 20, Catherine 15, Robert 17, Lachlan 12, Marrion 10, and Angus 8 all McLeods at Ardahoil, Torosay.

There is an 18 year old Angus McLeod in 1851 living in Kilmore and Kilbride.

I have not found him in 1861.

Parents from:  http://www.mullgenealogy.co.uk/cr_deaths.html
McKinnon, Sarah   (c. 1787-1859) farmer's [Norman McLeod] wife she died 12 March 1859 at Ardachaoil, Torosay aged 72. F. Lachlan McKinnon farmer, dec. M. Mary McKinnon, M/S McKinnon dec. Info. Norman McLeod husband, present.
McLeod, Norman   [married to Sarah McKinnon] See McKinnon, Sarah (c.1787-1859), or McLeod, his wife, who died at Ardachaoil, Torosay.
McLeod, Sarah   (c.1787-1859) Farmer's wife, married, died 12 March 1859 at ArdachaoilTorosay, aged 72. F. Lachlan McKinnon farmer. M. Mary McKinnon

I believe this Angus McLeod had a child with Mary McSporran named Archibald McLeod in 1856 Killean and Kilchenzie.

I am trying to sort out the use of Angus McLeod b1823 Lochbroom, ROC
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=880538.msg7535743,
as it appears unlikely, from the information at hand, that the Angus McLeod who went to Australia with Mary McSporran and son Archibald ever lived in Lochbroom, Killearnan, or Knockbain in ROC.

Based on info I have given below I don't think the Angus McLeod who married Mary McSporran and had a son Archibald registered in Scotland in 1856 came from Ross-shire.  I believe this Angus McLeod was born between 1829 and 1834 in Argyll.  Perhaps the Archibald McLeod born in 1856 is a clue to the grandfather's name.  I suspect Angus, aged 18, is with a family of McLeods from Torosay in Mull, Argyll in 1851.  Parents: NORMAN MACLEOD/SARAH MACKINNON.  It is also possible he is from Tyree with parent ARCHIBALD MACLEOD/ANN CAMERON except I cannot find a corresponding birth record.

The info I got from Donald MacDonald-Ross was this "Angus born 8 April 1823 Lochbroom, parents Murdoch McLeod 1794- and Ann McLeod 1799-
"Living at Fearn in 1851 is Murdoch McLEOD, 57, Ann MLEOD, 52, Angus McLEOD, 26, Kenneth McLEOD, 22, Donald McLEOD, 19, and Mary McLEOD, 16.  Everyone in the family is said to be born at Lochbroom.  In 1861 they are in Tarbat."

I found this also:
There is an Allan McLeod who married Christian McLeod 16 Jan 1815 and an Allan MacLeod who married Isobel Graham 11 Feb 1819 in Lochbroom.
Potentially JOHN chr 03/02/1820, JOHN 10/02/1821, MURDOCH 01/11/1822, ANGUS 04/08/1823, MARGARET
15/08/1827, CATHARINE 17/03/1830, and KENNETH 17/10/1830 all of Lochbroom are his offspring.
There are two Allan McLeod as possible parents one is from Ullapool and the other from Achnaherd.

Achnaherd
Allan 50    Crofter,    Janet 40 (possible wife), Murdo 20, Alex 10, Kath 5, Christy 5, and John 2.

Thanks again Debra.  I think I have found the two Angus McLeods aged 20 in the 1841 census.  One is in Achandrean and the other is Badinscally.  I suspect a remarriage or possibly something else has added to the difficulty in locating the right people.

I wonder how Angus McLeod met Mary McSporran.  Four year old Archibald McLeod's birth is recorded in 1856 KILLEAN AND KILCHENZIE.

Donald MacDonald-Ross sent me this for the other Angus.
"Death registered as 4 Aug 1873 at 'Glutan' (Glutton) of 86 year old Christina Macleod, Pauper, Widow of Roderick MacLeod, Tenant, daughter of Norman McLeod, Tenant, and Henrietta, maiden surname Maclean. Informant her son, Angus McLeod."  His parents.

Also, his guess is newly married Angus had moved out shortly before the 1841 census, and 2 year old Margaret was an illegitimte daughter of his 17 year old Mary.

Strathan 41-2
Ardmair 51-53

For any Australians following this thread: regarding their Angus, no luck at all.
