Hi,

Because the 4th Horse because the 7th Dragoon guards, I think in 1788.
I might as well give up on a marriage, I tried once before.. I can't believe how bad Irish records are.

I’ve learnt a lot the last two days! I didn’t realize that those enlisting before 1806 were for life! I guess Robert became too broken and worn out in the end and they discharged him in 1810. I think I’d speculate that he became ill during his time in the West Indies and never quite recovered. If he had other children then it would have to have been before 1793/4 when he left for the Indies and so not Berwick. I’m curious as to where he was between leaving the 4th in 1790 and joining the 21st abroad in 1793. From joining the 4th in 1774 to 1790 he was stationed around Ireland so my guess would be as Ann was Irish that they married there and probably had children in Ireland? I have no Idea who this other Robert could be, I’ve found him on the 1841 I think in St Helier, Jersey aged 60 born England.

https://archive.org/details/cihm_48387/page/n61  This is interesting, the 4th were stationed in Maryborough in 1772-1775 so Robert joined up whilst they were garrisoned in his hometown. They moved about a bit!

Wow this is fantastic thank you again!!

It won't let me view the two images you posted last. This all fits in beautifully though and I now have Ann's maiden name. I see daughter Ann died in 1802 in Berwick. So the invalids were garrisoned in Berwick before Jersey?

Thanks John,

I am sure thats him, age fits and it is in the St Michaels parish which is where James and Ann were living on the 41.

Hi,

Yes, I am reconsidering his birth year as I was going by the age of his wife until I knew otherwise.
I'm sure that this is him. He dies in Southampton in 1820.
I would have been surprised given the amount of disease in the West Indies at this time if families had been encouraged to accompany soldiers, especially just a private. It's a long time to be away though. I wonder if he and Ann had children before his 1790 posting to St Vincent. I only have my James in 1804 to this couple.

Thanks for the link  ;)

Hello,

I didn't really think about that before but good question, could Sponsor Robert Carey be an older son? Robert Carey would have been 50 when James was born and Ann about 39. I have Ann on the 1841 near Southampton with James and his family. I have done a little research on his regiments and it looks like he went to the West Indies in 1890 with the 21st and transferred to the 59th whilst there before returning in late 97 invalided. It sounds like disease was rife over there. Would his family have gone with him or would they have stayed in the UK, any ideas? I need to try and find births of siblings to James somehow, there most likely were more children i'd have thought.

Thank you John

Thank you so much for all your help.

I think it is my man, too much of a coincidence to be in the 3rd Vets Btn? I think that Carey/Keary/Kerry could just be down to how his name was heard? All the names sounds alike, he would have had a nice Irish accent I should imagine too. I found one document just now for regimental registers of pensioners and underneath his birthplace was noted 4 years W. Indies.

On the Baptism it says: James son of Robert Carey of the Third Royal Garrison Battalion and of Ann his wife was baptised on the fifteenth day of January one thousand eight hundred and four. Sponsors- James McNarnee/Namee? -Robert Carey- Elizabeth McNarnee/Namee

Thank you! Interesting.. I believe it says Maryborough, Queens
Obelix is Abbeyleix, County Laois and very close to Maryborough.

Can you read what that says first? why he was there? I think it says 'worn out'. He was in the regiment of Major Francis William Cashell, I see he became Lt Col Cashell in 1811 (10th Regiment of foot) I am assuming Robert was no longer fit to serve his regiment so was sent to the 3rd Royal Garrison/Veteran Btn This must be the right Robert!?

Quite possibly yes! I don’t know anything about him other than what I wrote before and that he married an Ann, no idea where or when and that they had a son, James, born in January 1804 in Jersey.
