Hi brooksburns & patrexjax,

Many thanks indeed for your replies, very much appreciated. My apologies for the non response until now, this due to my taking a break/hiatus from family research for a while, but happily back now!

brooksburns, Many thanks indeed for the replies and info contained therein, much appreciated. I think that you are right, we are indeed almost certainly related, your Ann Brooks nee' Parker being my Isabella's sister. I had never been able to reliably find Martha & Isabella in 1841, therefore I had not known that Martha was with her parents at the time. Neither for some reason had I ever found Ann Parker's marriage to Elijah Brooks! Having had a look, I think that you are right as regards the correct Graham line, with the Stonehouse, Linton & Saunderson lines coming in to the Graham family. My thanks again, much appreciated.

patrexjax, many thanks for you reply concerning Elijah Brooks ancestry, much appreciated.

Many thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Hi ColC & JenB,

Many thanks indeed for your replies, very much appreciated. Apologies for my tardy response.

ColC, Many thanks re the details of the Peter Stephenson & Isabel Henderson family, very much appreciated indeed! You are also correct in that John Stephenson (my 4x gt grandfather) did indeed spend his life in Northumberland, specifically the South Blyth area. Lastly, I was indeed ware of the Durham Records online website, on of many that I had tried, never hurts to be reminded though!;D

JenB, Many thanks indeed for the BT's info on familysearch, the Northumberland Militia info on wikipedia, the Sunderland St John's/Antiquarian info and the 1795 Newspaper info, very much appreciated.

To say that I am speechless, would be an understatement! I had pretty much given up hope of ever  pushing my Stephenson's any further back. Your findings look to be pretty much spot on, as regards the limited info that I had to start with. I am now off to assimilate the info & see what more can be found! Just goes to show that you should never give up!

I wonder whether any Northumberland Militia records exist and if so where they would be?

My thanks to you both once again.

Kind regards

David

Durham / Help needed with my Stephenson's of Sunderland, 1790s.

Hi all,

I have recently discovered the name of an ancestor's father, but cannot get any further. I cannot find a single solitary record for him & am in need of a second pair of eyes and/or some assistance please!

My 4x great grandfather John Stephenson, states on censuses (1851 & 61) that he was born in Hendon, Sunderland. Age at death and from censuses gives a birth range of 1793-1796.

John married twice, firstly to Ann Wilson in 1816 at Earsdon, Northumberland. Ann died in 1857. John remarried in 1858 in Tynemouth to Jane Lamb, a widow. John died in Blyth, Northumberland in 1867, aged 72.

The second marriage gives John's father (my 5x gr grandfather) as Peter Stephenson, a Tailor by trade.

I have been unable to find a baptism for a John to a Peter Stephenson, nor have I been able to find any children baptised to a Peter Stephenson at all! No burial has been found for a Peter Stephenson either. The only marriage that shows up for a Peter Stephenson is on  25th Aug 1767 to a Mary Mills at St Michael & All Angels, Bishopwearmouth. This marriage however is 26 to 29 years before John's birth & cannot therefore be right.

I have also tried looking in early trade directories to see if I could pin Peter down anywhere, but found absolutely nothing! In trying to think outside the box slightly (or maybe it was clutching at straws! ;D), I also checked apprenticeship records and marriage licence records, again turning up nothing. Newspapers have yielded nothing also. I have also checked non conformist records, but as yet haven't found any for the Sunderland area.

I am beginning to wonder if this Peter Stephenson, ever existed. It seems very strange to say the least, that not a single record can be found for him at all!

Any and all assistance, will as always be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Hi Comberton & Heywood,

Many thanks for your replies, much appreciated.

Comberton, many thanks for the baptism of Edith, 1939 Register & 1911 census, much appreciated.

I'm not finding the 1911 for William on FindMyPast, are you able/allowed to give the ref number? Thanks if so!

Also the Fitzgeralds have become the last lot to be completed, as I have just found  the death of the other missing sister (Emily Gibson 1882-1913), not sure how I missed her death before! ::)

My thanks again to all who have helped on this thread, all very much appreciated indeed!

Kind regards

David

Hi all,

Now for the penultimate missing sibling, the first of two sisters of Charles & George Gibson.

Sarah Gibson was born in 1886 in Ancoats, Manchester. I Haven't found a baptism for her as yet.

Sarah is with her parents in 1891 at  8, Hey Street, Bradford, Manchester (RG12/3258/46/32).

Sarah is with her widowed mother in 1901 at 23, Garrick Street, Ancoats, Manchester and is a Pipe Finisher by trade. (RG13/3742/126/17)

Sarah marries William Fitzgerald (born 1883), a Glass Cutter by trade of 40, Gray Street, Ancoats, Manchester on 30th Oct 1909 at St Jude's church Ancoats, Manchester, link here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:233V-4JL
Oddly Sarah names her Grandfather George as father instead of Charles (Snr).  A daughter Edith Fitzgerald was born in 1910, the only child I have found for the couple so far.

The 1911 Census at 49, Gray Street, Ancoats, Manchester (RG14/24102/schedule 154), shows Sarah Fitzgerald (Nee' Gibson) and 4 month old Edith, living with Sarah's widowed mother. William Fitzgerald I have as yet to locate in 1911.

After 1911, I have been unable to find any further trace of either William or Sarah Fitzgerald. Edith Fitzgerald turns up briefly in 1913 & 1914.

On the 11th April 1913, Edith Fitzgerald is admitted to the Swinton Industrial school, Chorley Road, Swinton, Manchester (parish to which chargeable to is given as Prestwich).

She is admitted to the same school again in January 1914 and discharged on 8th Feb 14 to Crumpsall. She is admitted to  the school for a third time on 4th Dec 1914, (parish to which chargeable to is again shown as Prestwich). After this I have been unable to find anything of Edith.

Any and all help and assistance, as always will be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David
