Family History Beginners Board / Re: Help I have hit a wall!
« on: Monday 15 November 21 19:32 GMT (UK)  »
Sometimes the best thing to do is leave a brick wall for 6 months. Wait while more resources become available and then return to the problem with fresh eyes. Sometimes you go round and round in circles and miss the obvious.
The other thing you can try is researching siblings as this sometimes leads to clues in their information.

Remember that you do not need to prove that you are related to the deceased when registering the death. You are asked the question. It could also be information not written down correctly.

If you have access to British newspapers there are several articles you can read that cover some of the speeches he made to different societies.

It could be a summer training session held on the school premises. I was going on the architecture of the building

I would suggest Folkestone Grammar school for Girls. Looking at their older buildings it could be a match. My other suggestion would be West mount school which is no longer in operation.

The Common Room / Re: Digitalised Newspapers
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 17:36 BST (UK)  »
I have had a quick look at the Newspapers which are available on findmypast. There are lots of Frederick Hartley’s. Found one report that fits in with what you describe. All it states is a 29 year old labourer from Disbury obtained money by false pretences. The date of the newspaper is 26/10/1867.

Hope this helps

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Didn’t expect that!!
« on: Saturday 25 September 21 08:39 BST (UK)  »
My husbands father had a similar story but he was told about it. He was raised as the oldest child of the family and accepted his dad as his father. On the morning of his marriage his mother informed him that he was born 5 years before she married his dad. He was in fact Scottish and his real father had been the postman!
We have followed her ancestry back through the Scottish records. As yet my husband has not done his DNA so have no idea who his Scottish grandfather is.
The family as a whole found this very interesting. She kept the secret for 27 years but at least she told him. I often wondered how he felt learning all this on the day you are getting married.

You can search for surnames on this site where a lot of Haffenden’s are listed.
