It is a very good idea but I think some people will be disappointed. From my own wandering round various cemeteries and graveyards I know how disappointed you feel when you find no headstones because your ancestors were too poor to afford them. Finding just bare ground is not the same as a stone with lots of details and dates.

Find My Past has a Miss Catherine L MacAndrew boarding in a lodging house at 19 Atholl Crescent on 1901 Census, it says she was living on own means. There were also a number of servants there but not the person you are seeking.

I have a copy of a 1905 map which shows Woodhouse Carr and it shows as in the Buslingthorpe area of Leeds and straddles Meanwood Road.

It is difficult to say because they both have their good points, having said that I do subscribe to both. I am considering cancelling my Ancestry one though because it keeps giving hints to records which if you want to see them requires a further payment to another Ancestry company such as Fold3. The big problem with any site is that when you take out a subscription you have no idea if you will find the records you want and how much information it will gives you if you do.

Holbeck Cemetery in Leeds in just round the corner from me and is home to many 'guinea' graves, one of them has over 40 people interred in it. You would expect it to cover quite a big area but it is actually no bigger than any other grave as far as you can see on the surface. Whilst I can understand coffins were probably not involved it must still be very crowded and the burials would have taken place over a number of days.

I wonder if you have taken into account that in Scotland Smith is quite often spelled Smyth. It drove me crazy when working on my counsin's tree.

I had a similar problem when trying to trace one of my great aunts, she had been in an asylum for over 40 years. When I enquired how I could access her records I was informed that I would have to prove my identity and lineage through a series of birth, marriage and certificates, even after doing that the local NHS trust could refuse my request. I was lucky though that she died just over 100 years ago and now I can see her records without proving anything, just like anyone could if they were interested in her.

I am related to Charles, he is/was my 3rd great uncle but am unable to add anything to what you have already found. I find it odd that he just seems to pop up in Derby having been in London and then goes to the USA. I have seen numerous newspaper articles about a Charles Cusworth living in Hertfordshire in 1899 who was foreman of jury which found Mary Ansell guilty of murdering her sister, he disappears from there after 1900. I wonder if they could be one and the same or is it a big coincidence.? Sadly the newspaper reports do not give his occupation as they would today.
