The Common Room / Re: Obscure contact through Rootschat?
« on: Thursday 28 August 08 11:30 BST (UK)  »
I have found a wonderful connection through RootsChat, just through someone googling a name I have posted on here - the power of RootsChat.

She is 2 generations above me and knew all the people I have spent a long time searching for, she is amazing to me.  I will always be so glad I found this site.

Not to mention because of all the wonderful help I have had from people here too.  I just find it amazing that you can post a question on here and so many people try to help.

Thank you all. :)

Berkshire / Re: Newtown Road Newbury - No address.

There is a place called Newtown just outside Newbury on the A339.  If you look at Multimap the A339 runs straight out of Newbury to Newtown before bending off to the east.  Could this have been a road to Newtown that was called Newtown Road or even the road was really callled something else but known as 'the Newtown Road' years ago and has disappeared under the dual carriage way.

Just a thought.

Thank you Kyt.

You must have quite a detailed source to know all this, I am intrigued.  Does it say what time/day he took off?

I am glad the other pilot was ok. It looks as though the squadron was in the process of converting from Sea Gladiators to Sea Hurricanes at the time.

Thanks for your help.

Oh wow, thank you for such a quick reply. :)

I have seen his name on the Battle of Brittain Memorial in London, below his cousin, but don't know anything about him.

The information you have given me is just what I wanted to know, thank you so much.  He died on June 11th an 1.30am, presumably instantly.  Poor lad.

Thanks for your help.

World War Two / Death at RNAS Arbroath June 1941
« on: Monday 25 August 08 13:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I have a Death certificate for Samuel Hoskin Bunch who died of multiple injuries and burns on 11 June 1941 at RNAS Arbroath.

I have tried looking around as I wondered how he came by such terrible injuries.  I have seen the entry on the CWGC site but this is all I can find.  I just wondered if anyone out there has any knowledge of whether it was a bombing raid, plane crash or what, or where else I can try looking.

I have checked death certificates several either side of his but he was the only one so it might not have been an air raid.  I have been looking on Arbroath websites but can find no significant event.

Thanks for reading this.

Kincardineshire / Re: Chelsea Pensioners
« on: Saturday 23 August 08 09:04 BST (UK)  »
The Chelsea Pensioners as we know them today are the 'In-Pensioners' ie they live in the Royal Hospital.  Any soldier who received a pension used to be called a Chelsea Pensioner and were 'Out-Pensioners' if they received their pension at home.  Hope that helps.

This is a link to a piece about a Test Pilots' reunion recently, they are amazing brave people and I just posted it for interest, it is no help really but if you could find their association someone might know - a bit of a shot in the dark probably.
