Armed Forces / Re: Army Rugby Union

Thanks Annie, yes I will definitely try them, thank you.  I was just reading about the other footballers, like all the soldiers they were so brave and so sad they lost their lives.  George enlisted in August but the others didn't join up until November which presumably is why he wasn't with them.  I know George's father was recruiting for the Derby Scheme but I think that was in 1915.

Edit : Actually his medal card says date of entry 14.8.14 but the first newspaper cutting about him playing football is dated February 1905 so he must have been in the army much earlier, which makes sense as he was born in 1882.

All these snippets help to piece together the lives of these people don't they, it is fascinating.

Thanks for your help.

Annie, your link is sooo close, but doesn't mention him on it.  His name was George W Bunch and he did play for Hearts as well as the Army team so he may have joined up at the same time.  He stayed in the army after WW1 so his records will not be at Kew.  I have a newspaper article about him which says he was a well-known footballer in the Army, having played in international and representative matches.  He was in the ASC so I will go down that route.  Thanks for your help, knowing your expertise on the armed forces I thought it was just worth asking you, you are such a mine of information.

Thanks ever so much for the link and for looking,

Annie, that looks a good site, you always manage to find such interesting things connected with the army.  :)

You don't happen to know if there is a similar one about football do you?

I have a soldier in the ASC who played football for the army in the Army v Navy match in February 1905.  I looked back on the above site but there was no equivalent pages about army football history.

thanks for reading this,

Thanks Two jays,  I have tried there, I must have tried everywhere really and it was just a longshot that you might have some information.  The name just jumped out at me when I saw your posting.  Thanks ever so much for replying, I hope you manage to get more info on your tree, like mine your ancestor was quite well known at the time, and they probably met each other!

Good luck

I hope you don't mind me intruding on your thread, but I couldn't help it when I read about your  Drummond Shiels men.

I have a very tatty copy of an obituary of my Gt Gt Grandfather's obituary which has a photo taken by Drummond Shiels Edinburgh at the top.

I wondered if you know what happened to any of their work or of anywhere that may have any copies of photos as I would love to see what he really looked like.  What I have is a photocopy of a photocopy of a newspaper cutting from 1923!

We have tried everywhere we can think of to find photos as he was a State Trumpeter for Scotland and Bandmaster  of the Queen's Edinburgh Rifles and conducted numerous concerts in the various parks in Edinburgh.

I know this is probably a question you cannot answer and please excuse my cheek, but it was just worth a try.

I hope you get some good help with your research.  Good luck.

best wishes

Hi Tony,

I am sure HMS Drake and HMS Raleigh are shore training bases, see this link:

I know my father always said when I was AT rather than ON these two, but I can't help with any of the others, sorry.

Good Luck
