Census and Resource Discussion / Unusual information on a Birth Certificate
« on: Sunday 30 July 06 00:00 BST (UK)  »
I recently aquired my Grandmothers Birth certificate which confimed her parents names etc; but had a strange statement in the column that specifies name and residence of informant;

 ESTHER WICKS
 MOTHER

 BINSTEAD HANTS
 AS PER DECLARATION
 DATED NINTH
 AUGUST 1904

the actual registration of birth is 3 days later on the 12th August ???
Does anyone have any idea what this could mean ? and is it possible that the actual declaration was recorded ? I can't understand why she made a declaration but didn't register the birth at the same time.
I do know from long ago stories from my grandmother that her parents did not stay together and she was raised by her father and his parents who would not have her Mother anywhere near because she was a "showgirl". I realise now that probably meant a travelling show or fairground, which could have a connection to the above statement, but is there anyway i can find out more?

Other Countries / British Honduras / Belize
« on: Saturday 29 July 06 23:14 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody know if there are any passenger records (or anything at all ) that may show names of emigrants to British Honduras, (Belize) particularly late 1800's. What was then a British Colony and is still an English speaking nation was pretty much overtaken by the Brits for quite some time. there must be something out there??!!

The Common Room / Wet Nursing.
« on: Friday 07 July 06 22:52 BST (UK)  »
As I understand it, a wet nurse is a woman who suckles (breast feeds) another womans child. I have found a "wet nurse" who is 67 years old. Is this physically possible? I personally don't think it is. Are there any medical experts out there who can advise on this?

Midlothian / copywrite? and shared b.m.d.
« on: Saturday 15 April 06 01:23 BST (UK)  »
Have read a few posts on this subject, but can't say i understand.
If i want to add unused info to this site, or even used!? for others to share, thereby creating possible useful data, how do I know if it is under copywrite? What can I contribute, and what can I not? I have spent plenty already on this new "hobby".  Is what I have bought not legally mine? Maybe this confusion is what is stopping people from contributing.

Kildare / Gorman and Kelly families; How to use I.G.I.?
« on: Saturday 15 April 06 00:40 BST (UK)  »
Have recently discovered that my ancestors most probably came from Kildare. the next quest is ...what info can i glean thus? I have a William Gorman who married Ellen Kelly who had 4 children that I know of;John b.1845, Michael b.1847, Catherine b. 1850 and Patrick b.1852 This info gained from I.G.I. Can I now hope to find records of marriage or births for William and Ellen? If so how do I do this? Ireland is notoriously difficult to search and have tried various internet options. Found 3 William Gormans on Griffiths Valuations in Kildare but what does this mean and how can I find out more?

Ireland / Ancestors "Irish" , names Gorman,Kelly, Shields and Brannan
« on: Thursday 13 April 06 01:17 BST (UK)  »
Have reached the brick wall I have heard so much about. Have managed very successfully to find my ancestors back to 1871 in Scotland, but it seems they all originate from "Ireland". No mention of whereabouts in Ireland , just Ireland. Help! what do I do next? My g-grandfather was Michael Gorman, married to Margaret Shields in Scotland in 1871, birthplace Ireland, his parents Wlliam Gorman and maybe ,Helen Kelly. (I say maybe because cannot quite make out christian name on marriage cert of Michael) not in Scotland at that time, so am presuming still in Ireland. Margarets parents Charles Shields and Jane Brannen, in Scotland at the time but born in Ireland, no county, just Ireland. All seem to belong to a community of coal miners living in Edinbirgh area from1850's onwards and from cencus info. lots of Irish there at the time. Does anybody have any info or advice on this?
thanks Joanne.
