Yes they are ALL surnamed Jelley. Also living in the same household are

Margaret Lord 1890 born Hamstead
Kathleen Lord 1920 born City Road London
William Healy 1882 born London.

John

That is certainly confusing for me! Do you think you could send a picture of the record for me to look at?
Thank you for all the additional information!

Cannot post images of 1921 census for copyright reasons.

John

Could you link it to me in a private message?

Hello - do all these people have the surname 'Jelley'? I don't have records for Henry, Sarah and George.

22
Found them on 1891 and 1901 at 9 Mansfield Road, St. Pancras with a widowed Frances Jelley - all of them listed as Jelley and William shown as son !!!

Although living as man and wife they didn't marry until 1895 -

William Davies Jelley    Bootmaker    son of William Jelley, Drover
Maria Sullivan   widow                      dau. of William Guinnee

both of 9 Mansfield Road, married 9th September 1895 St. Pancras

1911 still at same address, once again as Jelley.

Looked for a marriage for Maria to a Sullivan but the closest I could find was in the right area butas Maria Guinner to Patrick O'Sullivan Ware??? Mar.qtr.1882 St Pancras.

Census shows a dau. Margaret bc.1890 but haven't found a birth entry so far so don't know if from Maria's first marriage, or her second.   Also a daughter Grace bc.1897 and have found her birth entry:

Grace Kathleen Jelley Davies  Dec.qtr.1896 St. Pancras, mmn Quinnee!

Will keep on checking.

Thank you so much for all your help, Annette - you've answered so many questions, and I have managed to fill in a lot of gaps with what you've told me. The surname of Davies is certainly confusing - I have no idea why William was born with this. Are you certain that he is the William Davies born in 1863? Surely a child born whilst Frances and William Jelley (Sr.) were married would be born with the surname Jelley, even if the child's father wasn't actually William Sr.?

Dorothy Ellen Jelley Davies was born on the 30th September 1893 at 9 Mansfield Road in the district Pancras, London, England. Her parents were William and Maria Davies. Maria's maiden name is recorded online as 'Guinner', but due to family knowledge that Maria may have been Irish, I believe this may be a mistranscription of 'Guinness' (the word is hard to read on the certificate itself). I believe that Dorothy had a brother called William Joseph, born in Pancras in the 2nd quarter of 1892 - Maria's name is transcribed as 'Guinnse' here.
Dorothy's birth was reported by an 'H. Jelley' (who likely inspired Dorothy's middle name), who is recorded as being present at the birth. However, Dorothy stopped using this middle name in adulthood, going by just Dorothy Ellen Davies.

Family history also says that Dorothy had a sister (or half sister?) called Margaret (which I can find no record of), and that her father - William - was illegitimate. These facts may or may not be true.

The reason that I am posting here is because I can find no record of the family of William, Maria, William Joseph and Dorothy in any census records, no fitting birth, marriage or death records for William or Maria or any trace of what happened to William Joseph (who I don't believe died young, but lived until at least the 1950s), or Margaret.

I do not need any assistance with investigating Dorothy's marriage, daughter or death. I have these on record already.

I would be very grateful if anybody could help me find any additional information.

Thank you for reading.

The Common Room / Searching for more information about a death

My great-great-great grandfather David Moir drowned in the King William IV Dock in Dundee, Scotland in January 1877.

Although I don't think that his death was suspicious - it was most likely an accident or suicide - I would like to know more about what happened (the article is very short). Does anyone know where I should look?

I have found a few workhouse records that may match, but cannot be sure.

Question #1: Which workhouse records have you found, and for what year(s)?

Question #2: Your avatar photo reminds me of an actress from the 1930s. Is the person in your avatar an ancestor? Just curious...

Ignore the bit about the workhouse records, I no longer believe that they match.

My profile picture is a model who was called Betty May - she was my great-great grandmother's sister.

Is this the possible birth of Rosetta Turner

TURNER, ROSETTA       mmn DOVER

I'm confused as to why people are researching Rosetta Turner, as I'm not currently looking into her. I already know that she was the daughter of Esther Eliza Dover (daughter of Rosannah) and her her husband William Taylor. The only person I need to figure out is Florrie Wade.

The Common Room / Can anybody help me find what happened to Eliza Wade?
« on: Sunday 27 March 22 23:11 BST (UK)  »
Eliza Wade was born on the 8th of September 1888, with her twin sister Harriet, as the daughter of Edward Wade (1854 - ?) and Rosanna Wade (nee Gould; previously Dover) (1850 - ?). She had an older sister named Alice - however, Harriet AND Alice died soon after birth, making Eliza the only surviving child of the Wades until the birth of her sister Florrie ten years later (who I have previously posted about).

She appears in the 1901 census with her parents. However, the 1911 census states that out of the Wades' four daughters, only one is living - and the one living must be Florrie, as she appears in it. This indicates that Eliza must have, like Alice and Harriet, died - however, I can find absolutely no corresponding death record or marriage record (as she may have died under a married name). I have combed through all records that may match, and found out that they were different women.

Furthermore, in the 1911 census with her parents and sister, her name actually appears but is crossed out: 'Lizzie Wade - 23 - Single - Born in Wistow - English.'

I am very confused - can anybody help?
