Would anyone be so kind as to pore over the microfiche for Rotherham baptisms from 1560 - 1585 or so?

I have the marriage of Robert Bilcliff and Agnes Gyl in Rotherham in 1560 from Boyd's marriage index, although it doesn't appear on Jack Perry's transcription of a transcription on Genuki. I'm looking for the names of his children.

Robert died in 1614 - his will mentions son Hugh, daughter Elizabeth Pye. I think there were other children but need confirmation of their names.

Many thanks

Robert Broadbent of the Launds Inn Museum Golcar has decided to put all his transcriptions online. Lots of Scammonden goodies there now, more to come.

Also the Pole Moor Chapel burial book, a family heirloom kept by his ancestors who were grave diggers at Pole Moor from its start.

Just had an email from Genes Reunited - all their resources are free to view from 6PM - 8PM on New Years Eve. Not sure who is eligible, I have a basic paid membership only.

I hope they manage to cope with the rush!

Technical Help / Ancestry image viewer in Firefox
« on: Thursday 23 September 10 18:21 BST (UK)  »
I normally use Internet Explorer 8 which I am quite happy with, except that recently the Gmail preview gadget doesn't work in igoogle.

I like this gadget, so thought I would change to Firefox, where it does work. However, I now find I can't view Ancestry images at all in Firefox. I get a constant prompt to download the enhanced image viewer, but when I go through this process it apparently installs, but nothing has changed and I still get the same prompt screen which I can't bypass to use the basic viewer.

Of course, I do actually have the enhanced viewer, because I use it in Explorer!

I've googled, and found several threads from a couple of years ago when the enhanced viewer was new. One has complicated instructions from Ancestry about installing it with all security features disabled which I am reluctant to follow. Also, it says you must ensure that a certain file is not on your computer before doing this. I think the file will be there, because I have the enhanced viewer. I'm scared to remove it because it might leave me with no ability to see the images at all!

Any ideas anyone? Has anyone managed to get the enhanced viewer to work in both IE and Firefox on the same computer?

Census and Resource Discussion / LDS photo copying service
« on: Wednesday 01 September 10 11:58 BST (UK)  »
I've just discovered that the LDS have a photocopying service for items in the family history library. Never heard of this before, it might be useful to someone.

I have a Joseph Tempest born in Yorkshire enlisted around 1861. The family story was that he served in Ireland, then was about to be posted to Canada but didn't like this prospect and was bought out by his family definitely before 1865 when he emigrated to America.

I would really like to verify this story but don't know how to begin. Can anyone help?

Somerset Lookup Requests / Eliza FRY born North Newton c. 1835
« on: Thursday 01 April 10 13:54 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for the baptism of Eliza Fry, whose age is very consistent on census records. She usually says she was born in North Pemberton, but on one occasion says North Newton.

I can see a baptism of an Eliza Fry on the 23 Dec 1832 at North Pemberton, to singlewoman Anne Fry. This could be her I suppose, although it doesn't quite fit with her age on the census. I'm just wondering if  North Newton baptisms would be included in the North Pemberton records?

I've looked on Genuki, which seems to indicate that North Newton church was a chapelry of North Pemberton at the time. My Yorkshire experience is that chapelry records might or might not be included in the mother church records, and it's very difficult to find out!

Also, I can't find her in 1841!

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Family Tree Guide

Is anyone using this to put their family tree online?

http://www.familytreeguide.com/home_index.php

It seems to be a similar idea to Tribal Pages, but to my eye at least it has a much cleaner and user friendly appearance. I've recently come across a few US based trees which use it, but would like to know what fellow rootschatters think.

United States of America / Mormon emigrants Halifax to Nebraska
« on: Thursday 25 February 10 15:37 GMT (UK)  »
I've just discovered some relatives who became Mormons, and emigrated to America in the 1860s and possibly early 1870s.

Phineas Tempest (1845) and his brother Joseph (1844) I believe emigrated in 1865, on the Belle Wood, leaving Liverpool 29th April and arriving New York 2nd June 1865. They were part of a group of Mormons bound for Nebraska.

Their younger brothers John Liberty ( 1850) and Alfred (1852) also emigrated, a bit later I think, but I 'm not sure exactly when.

Their step brother Ashworth Jackson may have gone with Phineas and Joe, but again I'm not sure of the year he emigrated

None of them seem to be on the Castle Gardens website, in fact that particular arrival of the Belle Wood doesn't appear at all, although one later the same year does.

If anyone has access to the appropriate records I would be very grateful for confirmation regarding Phineas and Joseph, and information on John Liberty, Alfred, and Ashworth Jackson. Also any other members of the Jackson or Tempest families who may have travelled with them.
