Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / High Street chapel Huddersfield
« on: Wednesday 03 February 10 12:37 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to  the baptism records for this chapel please?

From the IGI I have the baptism of Gersham Birtliffe on 11th Sep 1797, parents James Birtliffe and Martha. I'm hoping there might be more information, like abode or father's occupation.

Findmypast have just added Yorkshire to their incomplete 1851 census. I thought I would look at the images for my family, but couldn't find any of them under the West Riding. I discovered they have reversed the West and North Ridings - so you need to look under North Riding for the West Riding, and vice versa.

I have emailed them - but don't they check anything?

The Common Room / York Probate Index 1731-1858
« on: Tuesday 08 September 09 15:22 BST (UK)  »
This might be old news, but the new index to the York Prerogative and Exchequer Courts of Probate 1731 -1858 is now available at the Origins Network. Pay to view of course, and no free searches of just this index, but fills a big hole in finding Yorkshire wills.

The Index includes the testators name and gives the Borthwick reference number.

Monmouthshire / Blaenavon burials pre 1813
« on: Saturday 25 July 09 22:45 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to Blaenavon burials before 1813? Or are you going to Gwent record office?

I'm looking for the burial of James Walden (or variant), He was born in the Forest of Dean between 1755 and 1764, depeding on which of the many James Waldens he was. He was a miner, and moved to Monmouthshire about 1795, from the evidence of the baptisms of his children. I have his wife Hannah buried at Blaenavon in 1832, and also the burials of another James and a Mary. Online transcriptions at Mike John's monmouthshire families site start only at 1813 for Blaenavon burials.

I'm interested especially in James's recorded age at his death, which was most likely between 1796 and 1813. It might help to narrow down the possibilities for his baptism.

Is anyone going to the local studies section of Bradford library? Or anywhere else that has Thornton (Bradford) records?

I'm still looking for the marriage of James Driver. He was born about 1770 (I think). His daughter Lydia was baptised in Bradford in 1794, but says she was born in Denholme on the 1851 census. There is a possible marriage in Bradford (1786) but I think it's a bit too early, and another possible in Halifax (1792). I'd really like to be sure there isn't a Thornton one.

Gloucestershire / Fred/Frederick Hopton 1892
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 16:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Tidller

Hope you find this OK.

I guess you will have Frederick with his parents Reuben and Maria at Channons Hill Stapleton in 1901. Before that it gets a bit trickier.........

Frederick's branch of the family has been transcribed as Upton in every census except 1851, although virtually all the GRO birth, marriage and death records have them as Hopton. Fortunately they stay put in Fishponds, which makes it easier to find them.

I think they trace back to Robert Briggs Hopton baptised in Mangotsfield in 1783, who is a mystery man with no parents given on his baptism record.

Let me know if I can help you further - I have all the census references but don't want to spoil your fun!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Pieces missing from the 1911 census
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 15:15 GMT (UK)  »
I hope this might save someone from wasting hours searching for their relatives in 1911 in part of Halifax!

Using address search I got no results for several roads in Hipperholme and Lightcliffe, which I knew were there in 1901. I queried this with Findmypast, and got the following response:

"Although the vast majority of the West Riding of Yorkshire is complete, there are 2 pieces which are not yet online as they are still being examined by the Conservation Team to prepare them for scanning, there are approximately 1,500 individuals."

So it's not quite complete! Worth asking them if you have similar problems elsewhere.

Does anyone have access to Stapleton baptisms please?

I would be very grateful for a look up of the baptism of William Hopton, c. 1810. He says he was born in Stapleton on the 1851 census. Any other Hopton baptisms 1798 to 1812 would be a bonus!

Many thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Bradford marriage lookup please - TEMPEST
« on: Saturday 15 November 08 21:37 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone look up a possible Bradford marriage for me please?

I have been chasing my Tempest family through Halifax records, and have found my Eleazar Tempest baptised 20 Feb 1759 at Kipping Independent, Thornton by Bradford. His parents are Joseph and Sarah.

The IGI gives Joseph's baptism at Thornton on 1st August 1731, so I guess he will have married Sarah in Bradford around 1755, as his first known child, John Tempest, was baptised also in Thornton in 1756.

Fingers crossed!
