England / Non-conformist marriages before the Hardwicke Marriage Act
« on: Friday 16 June 06 22:19 BST (UK)  »
Could someone please confirm, is it the case that the Hardwicke Marriage Act merely confirmed existing practice? In other words, did marriages actually occur in non-conformist churches before the Act?

I know that non.conformist churches would have been few and far between at the time, but I understand that the Congregational Church pre-dated the Hardwicke Act. I am not sure about the Baptists.

The Common Room / Visiting Society of Genealogists
« on: Tuesday 13 June 06 22:25 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any advice about visiting the Society of Genealogists library. I have done very well with my family tree online, greatly helped by the fact that my family lines come from Halifax/Elland, and the Parish Registers for these places are online.

Now I have to check the Huddersfield registers and some of the non-conformist registers, all held by the Society of Genealogists.

Are there particular quiet/ busy times? Do I have to book in advance? Will someone be able to help me with using the fiche/film readers? Any general advice?

My ancestor Job Singleton married a Sarah on 30th December 1844 at Halifax Parish Church. The birth certificate of their daughter (1846) gives Sarah's maiden name as Crossland. Job's marriage certificate which I have just got from the GRO gives the bride's surname as Smith! Could someone please check the parish register to see how her name appears there? I am wondering if it was a clandestine marriage.

Occupation Interests / What was happening in Warwick in 1861?
« on: Thursday 04 May 06 14:45 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor William Helm was a stone mason from Halifax Yorkshire. In 1861 he was in Warwick with his family, and described on the census as a contractor employing 59 men. A relative, Thomas Helm was also in Warwick at the same time, presumably working on the same job. Only one of their children was born in Warwick, so I think they couldn't have been there for longer than 3 years or so.

Does anyone have an idea what they might have been working on?

Can anyone find the following family on the 1871 census? They should be in Halifax, possibly Ovenden or Northowram.

John Tempest  38
Mary Tempest 37
   Sarah 18
   James 16
   Barzilla 15
   John 13
   Ada  11
   Emma 9
   Martha 2

I can't find them at all. Many thanks.

I cannot find Martha Baldwin, born around 1826, in 1841. Also missing is Richard Summerscales, born around 1798. He should be with his wife Ann and possibly children. Martha Baldwin was born in Warley and Richard Summerscales in Skircoat according to later censuses. Can anyone help please?
