These have appeared today, actually due in May I think. They're not for beginners! I think a lot of detective work will be needed to find out exactly what a lot of them are, and where they are from.

Ancestry has provided a list of chapels etc with the WYAS references, but they don't appear on the actual records you get to see, just the name of the repository, Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Calderdale etc.

I recognise one of mine whose abode is given as Sowood. It's a chapel record of her expulsion because of immorality in 1850. She's on the 1851 census unmarried with her mother and stepfather, with a one year old daughter. I can't tell at the moment which chapel it is though. I'll have to do some more exploring!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Barnsley Militiamen 1806
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 17:04 BST (UK)  »
I know the Militia records for the Staincross Wapentake are at Doncaster Archives, so I won't be able to get to see them for quite a while.

I've found out though, that David Hey wrote a booklet about the militiamen of the Barnsley district 1806, published by Sheffield University in 1998. This seems to be unobtainable now, and I haven't been able to find out where there might be a copy.

Does anyone have a copy of this booklet, or know how I could get to see one, ideally on loan?

Suffolk / Bilcliffe family Hadleigh
« on: Friday 20 January 12 20:06 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to Hadleigh parish registers?

I have a Thomas Bilcliffe apprenticed to John Owen carpenter in London in 1715.

The record says he is the son of Edmund Bilcliffe of Hadley, Suffolk, a gardener.

The Bilcliffes originate in Yorkshire, with branches in Surrey, London and Lincolnshire at this time, so I'm surprised to see a reference to Suffolk.

Is there any trace of this family in the parish registers?

Thanks

I'm not sure if this has been posted before - apologies if it has. All the posts about the Ancestry transcription of the 1911 census reminded me to check if Findmypast were saying anything about when the redacted column of their version of the 1911 census would be available.

On the Findmypast blog on 7th December they say the previously hidden information will be available to view from 4th January 2012. Also any recorded details of  children three or under  born to women in prison. Only viewable on Findmypast apparently.

Monmouthshire / Pontypool workhouse records
« on: Wednesday 30 November 11 21:03 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Sarah Ann Hopton aged 7 and an Adeline Hopton aged 8 in the Pontypool workhouse in 1871. I know their father James Hopton had died aged 44 in 1866. Their mother Elizabeth (nee Powell) was his second wife, born around 1842. I have Sarah's birth certificate.

Adeline disappears from the record after 1871, but Sarah Ann is found on each census up to and including 1901, still in the workhouse, although her age varies by a few years each time. I don't find her in 1911, although there is a Bedwelty death in 1947 for a Sarah Hopton aged 85 who may be her.

I think Adeline must have died in the workhouse, although I can't find a burial. I also can't trace Elizabeth in 1871 or after, and I can't believe she would just have abandoned her two children and changed her name. I wonder if she also died in the workhouse?

The Pontypool workhouse records are in Gwent record office. I wonder if there is some kind person who is planning to visit and could check the admission and death records?
