The Common Room / information on gravestone?
« on: Wednesday 08 September 10 10:46 BST (UK)  »
do gravestones have more info on them than is recorded in the burial registers?
i ask as i've found an ancestor who died in 1795, i know what churchyard he was buried in (a long way from where i live unfortunately) but the register only gives the burial date. it could be the son or his father (both have the same name) who is buried there and if it's the father then a few confusing loose ends fill fall nicely into place!

The Common Room / what constitutes a definitive source record?
« on: Monday 07 December 09 10:42 GMT (UK)  »
In my case this applies to Richard Banks.
He was born in 1791 at Liskeard, Cornwall BUT his family were from Kent!
He isn't mentioned in his fathers will but then his father had remarried and only the children from that marriage were mentioned.
I have found his obituary in The Law Times which states his parents names, tieing him to the Banks family in Kent.

Would that be a definitive enough source?
I would assume, dangerous I know, that it would have been based on fact as it details his schooling and career as well.

Any thoughts?

Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 Census - John BANKS Cornwall
« on: Tuesday 26 August 08 16:43 BST (UK)  »
Hopefully he will be with the two women i think are his sisters Lydia Banks (b.circa 1793, Lostwithiel, Cornwall) and Harriet Banks (b.circa 1797, Liskeard, Cornwall).

John was born in 1786 in St Austell, Cornwall and hopefully his father will be listed as Richard Banks.

Thanks Bean

Completed Census Requests / india banks - Completed now thanks
« on: Tuesday 26 August 08 15:14 BST (UK)  »
I think i found her (aged 79, born Liskeard, Cornwall) in the 1871 census living with her sister Harriet (aged 73, born Lostwithiel, Cornwall). The census district was St Andrews, Devon. The problem is i can't find any trace of her anywhere else, deaths or census returns. From memory the census return had her being born around 1793 so she should show up somewhere.

My request is this - could someone please look her up in 1871 and check the original image in case India isn't her name?

Thanks

The Common Room / overseas BMD records
« on: Thursday 21 August 08 09:40 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for Richard Banks Davies, he married Ellen Margaret MacLeod in 1914 and died circa 1943/44.

Is there a branch of the BMD records that cover British nationals who marry and die overseas?

Cheers Bean
