The Lighter Side / Re: Family Habits
« on: Tuesday 23 April 24 11:10 BST (UK)  »
Old habits do die hard. My husband's grandmother was brought up in a tiny terrace house in the Manchester suberbs, which had very steep stairs. Eighty years later in a spacious semi-detached in Sale she still turned round and came down stairs backwards because she always had done.

Peover is pronounced Peever so that is almost certainly the places they intended. Of course you still have a choice of Over Peover or Lower Peover (alias Peover Superior and Inferior) but at least they are next to each other.

They look like traditional joiners aprons except they should have big front pockets and I can't tell if they have. Note that all the men at the front are wearing clogs except the one in the bowler hat.

Since females seem to be under-represented in this thread take a look at Pretoria. FreeBMD say there were 496 births of that name in 1900, compared with 1 in the years 1890-95

Technical Help / Re: Help with “C drive full” issue, please
« on: Saturday 06 April 24 09:08 BST (UK)  »
Photo editing software uses a lot of memory so it stows things temporarily on your hard drive while it is working. Unfortunately software tends to use the 'C' drive for this regardless of whether there is much more space on your 'D' drive. Assuming your big hard drive has more space than your SSD drive it might be worth looking for the setting to tell it to use the other one. Unfortunately I can't remember the right jargon. Anyone else?

The Common Room / Re: Help determining a Birth date range

You are over-thinking this Leon.

Officer - How old are you?
Recruit - About 20 I think, sir. Just let me work it out..
Officer - I'll put 20. As long as you are over 18 that is all that matters.

Even when they are 'accurate' ages are frequently out by a year one way or the other depending if he has had his birthday or not in that year - and if the informant remembers to think about the time of year of course. I would be looking anywhere 1878 to 1881. What does it say on the 1901 census? Better still the 1881 census if you know where he would be, since he could be only a few months old back then.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Manchester Library Marriage Request
« on: Monday 26 February 24 22:27 GMT (UK)  »
Well found Galium.
If Elizabeth lived on The Downs (which is in Altrincham to most people) then she had several local churches to choose from. Not St John's which apparently is C of E, but there was The Downs Congregational Church just off the Higher Downs. There was a Bowdon Presbyterian Church somewhere in the vicinity that I can't remember. And there was the famous Dome Chapel on Cavendish Road, (parallelish to Higher Downs) which was Methodist if I remember correctly. That one has gone of course, like so many other beautiful buildings. It is a great pity because you could use it as a landmark for miles around.
I went to the girls grammar school at the top of the hill but I barely recognise the area these days.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Manchester Library Marriage Request

It is listed as register office or registrar attended, so Luke cannot have a lookup because there is no parish register copy of the certificate to look at. But you do apply to Manchester Central Library for the certificate, with the reference quoted, because they also hold the older Register Office volumes and issue any required certificates.

(However if the Registrar attended a Catholic church, then his volume records the official ceremony and the church will have it's own record of the religious ceremony. The latter may have lots of detail or it may simply have names and witnesses names, but it also may be in a more obscure archive, or may not have been deposited anywhere! It doesn't sound like that will apply in this case.)
