Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: First name not obvious
« on: Friday 19 March 21 13:29 GMT (UK)  »
This is Stoke on Trent, Tunstall is mentioned elsewhere. Unhelpfully, in the same document it says that the father has deserted the family, and indeed, the 1881 census (if I got the right one) lists various family members but no father. As the boy was born about 1875, the  1871 census is no use, and the mother is not named, having died by 1889, there's an annoying lack of information to investigate further! I should add that this is part of a transcription project, so there is a limit to how much time I can spend on research. If all else fails I shall just have to put what it looks like with an added question mark,

But thanks for the suggestions so far - Jubal, Jobe, or John do at least look like real names.

Any ideas as to what this father's first name might be, please? It looks like Jobl, but surely not!

It's possible he had one or more accomplices for his offence - this was pretty common, but if they were younger than about 10 or older than 15 they would have been dealt with differently. Likewise, if the companion(s) were held to be less guilty, or did not have previous brushes with the law, they might be treated more leniently.

Saltley was a reformatory for boys only, despite what the article in the Birmingham Mail suggests. There were separate establishments for girls, as was the Victorian way.

It's a very large page from the Admissions Register of Saltley Reformatory, in 1885. I can't post a link because it is a photo I took myself, some years ago, hence the indifferent resolution of the snippet I posted. He lived, and committed his crime, in Wednesbury, in the Black Country near to Birmingham. Not noted for its textiles, but it is possible he stole from a shop. Unhelpfully, I could not find a report in the British Newspaper Archive.

If it is 'worsted' it's rather mangled!

I attach the original photo of the full page, if that will help with context.

Hi - having trouble working out what the last word is in the line that begins "Stealing a quantity of...]
I can't think of any word that would fit the apparent letters. Any help much appreciated.

I've had another look and agree that the word "been" is badly written, but the context is that this boy was released on licence (a sort of parole) to work at a colliery and called in at the school several times during that time. The snippet I posted was preceded by "Several boys who went home for their holiday [a week at Christmas] inform me that Adams was doing well and that he talks of calling in on me." And then it says, I now think, "He has hitherto been a frequent visitor."

So, I think "been" is correct, but I am grateful for the alternative suggestion, as it is all too easy to predict what is coming rather than is what is actually there.
